Motorbike/scooter in Italy
hello!
I will be visiting Italy for the first time (Venice, Florence and Rome), this coming month of June. I am thinking of renting a motorbike / scooter while I am in each cities, to commute around. Is this a good idea to do (traffic, distances, security, etc..)? I dont want to drive a car (I had a terrible accident before).
Thank you for your help.

I'd say it sounds very dangerous, especially in Rome where traffic is a nightmare and you would not be used to it. Also, useless in Venice where there are no roads. Florence might be better, but it's a small walkable city in any case.
You'd be better off getting around on bus in Rome, vaporetti in Venice and walking in Florence. In my opinion.

If you're frightened of driving a car, you'd be out of your mind hiring a motorbike or scooter.
The fatality rate for both, everywhere, is an order of magnitude greater than for cars. There's an argument about fun for hiring them nonetheless - but if safety's such a preoccupation, then there just isn't anything to talk about. Get on a bus like everyone else.

Sky01, I'd also recommend against renting a motorcyle or scooter - UNLESS you're quite an experienced rider. If so, I'd only rent a bike in Florence to explore Tuscany. I've lived in Rome for 3+ years and our only private form of tranport was a series of motorini. We owned bikes as large as 125cc because anything over that you must have a "certified" motorcyle license.
I've had a few incidents on our bikes - my wife also - so if you're nervous about a previous accident.... this many not be the environment you want to ride a bike in. You might look at this article about riding a scooter in Rome - and also look at the videos in the article. Might give you some insight into what you'll be looking at:

rineurope, i've read the article. hmm...i'm experienced but i don't think i'm THAT experienced, for Rome that is ;-). Thanks so much for the input and insight. I will just walk & take the bus ride....
