Nonsense, a 16 year old stabbed 28 people yesterday at the opening of the new Berlin Hauptbahnhof. (skin color wasn't an issue there) Come to Munich and be happy, it's "boringly" ;-) safe. Dresden will be the same....

i hope so. i just noticed that their has been an uprising in the last week. one of your government officials said " their are some areas of germany that a person should be scared and may not get out alive, referring to small and medium towns in brandenburg" hardly a welcoming endorsement!

Walking around alone at night in some eastern Berlin suburbs is something I wouldn't do! But there's nothing to see there anyway and I'm sure police will solve the problem.

Dangerous areas aren't unusual anywhere & you know how media loves to skew stories.

I hope you have a great time & a safe journey. I'm sure you will.

It is all about assessment of risk. I would guess your chances of being assaulted because of your colour while visiting Germany are significantly less than dying in a automobile related accident in the USA , but I presume you still use cars?

Hmmm ... what is it about the old eastern block / USSR? They seem to be a bit in the dark ages still. Racial attacks and attacks on gays seem to be noticable in the news in Europe.

Be very aware also that the world up is just around the corner. Soccer to you Americans. This means aggravated motivated intoxicated crowds will starting to come in soon from all over the world.

The safest thing is to remain home and hide under a large bed.

Still, there is no proof that the attacks were racially motivated, but it's a good occasion both for the media and for certain politicians to make a big deal. Things are always exaggerated. Germany is still one of the world's safest countries - for everybody.

On 3 July 2001, the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) published its second report on Germany. The Commission expressed its deep concern about the extent of racist and xenophobic attacks in Germany, as well as the social climate that encourages such attacks.

The ECRI is an official body established by the Council of Europe.
