monte carlo monaco
Has anyone stayed in monte carlo monaco close to the casino? I am hoping to find a moderately priced hotel close to the casino so that I will not need to travel during my 2 day 1 night stay.
thanks

We have stayed twice(we have friends who live there). If you stay there, you would actually get a different impression of Monte Carlo than those who just made a quick visit. It is not definitely not Provence quaint but more flashy and refined. There is a certain La Dolce Vita when we observed how the locals live. It does have some Beverly Hills element to it, but yet they have a very comfortable & refined lifestyle.
We enjoyed staying at the Hermitage which is a short block west of the main casino. The hotel service is very good though the guests are a bit to designer minded for us. The chef made special dishes just for us based on our request when we reserved a table. The terrace view is incredible as it overlooks the harbor La Condamine below. We could walk to everywhere since it has a great central location. It faces a small quiet park vs Hotel de Paris which faces the heart of the action day & night. The wives totally enjoyed the shopping in Monaco. If you are into gambling then you have even more reasons to enjoy staying close to the casino.

Hi,
I have booked an aparthotel at the adagio josephine de palais. We will be arriving at 3pm and leaving at around 2pm the next day. It is supposed to be only 5 minutes to the monte carlo casino which is to make my husband happy. I hope to visit a museum or shops in the area. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to and from the nice airport? I was also wondering if anyone had an experience there that is a must do or see for someone that is spending such a short time and traveling on foot.
Thanks

We have stayed in Monaco at Cap d'Ail...at the Marriott there. Not next to the casino but within walking distance. I enjoyed our stay there (at the Marriott and the city). The Marriott is located on the harbor.

The fun & quick way of arriving into Monaco is by helicopter which is readily available at the Nice airport. Unless you're going during special events like the Monte Carlo race, I don't think you need to reserve ahead of time. Once you land in Monaco, you'll be shuttled to your hotel (included with the heli ride). We've never used the train so can't tell you how. We usually rent a car from Avis at the Nice airport. The drive to Monaco is somewhat easy (16 miles), though in the summertime you should avoid the beach traffic at Corniche Basse which is the waterfront & lowest road. We like taking the beautiful Corniche Moyenne mountain road via Eze (lots of curves) or the freeway (toll). The village of Eze is a must see if you have time, in fact you may consider having dinner at the Chateau Eza hotel terrace with a breathtaking view which features reasonably priced prix-fix dinners. Your husband may enjoy the cigar lounge there. You can also have breakfast at the terrace/lounge. http://www.rivieraby.com/chateaueza/pages/profile.htm
Alternatively you can have dinner outdoor at the Cafe de Paris to watch people & cars at the Casino square.
Your apartment hotel is located in the Beausoleil district of Monaco which is just 4-5 long blocks away from the casino. I believe normal shopping area starts just 2-3 blocks away from your hotel (southwest, towards the casino). There is also a 2-3 story underground shopping mall just before the casino, close to the Cafe de Paris. If you walk in the other direction (southeast) towards Boulevard Larvotto, you'll eventually reach Avenue de Princess Grace where you'll find the high end designer houses like Hermes and the only public beach in Monte Carlo called the Larvotto beach. We're not museum goers, so don't know much about it, but the Palace and the botanical garden in Monacoville are quite a long walk from Beausoleil. I'd recommend taking a taxi because you won't just be challenged by the distance but also vertically, which is probably not a problem if you're a regular hiker.
I've never been to the Adagio Josephine, but we've stayed at another Pierre Vacances facility many years ago. It's a nice large suite chain apartment-hotel. The one major complaint I have is that the low bed is literally made of soft light weight packaging foam (very poor support, which is OK if you're younger). On the plus side, it has a complete kitchen & separate living area. The furnishing is scandinavian white laminate and light wood. You'll be staying in the middle of busy urban area close to the city conveniences.
Just east of the casino/Cafe de Paris towards Blvd Larvotto, you'll find plenty of less expensive simpler cafes/restaurants with indoor outdoor settings. There are also some simpler but good pizza/pasta places around the harbor.

Dax, you rock. Thanks so much. Underground Mall hmmmm. I can't wait. We won't be renting a car this time because I heard from some folks that it takes a little getting used to driving in europe if you've never been before. Helicopter?? Sounds very expensive but very adventurous. I'm afraid to even ask how much it is.
thanks again

dallen03,
The cost of the heli ride is 95-100 Euros a person and takes six minutes, with departures every 20 minutes.

In the past, if you book two nights in any hotel in Monaco through their central hotel reservation, you'd get a 2 for 1 deal for the Heli ride. I had assumed that it's available now, but I can't find any so far, hopefully it'll appear later, closer to summer.
Not to dampen your enthusiasm, the tax on goods in Monaco is 20%. Still my wife bought a luggage piece at the underground mall for a reasonably good price (according to her) and my daughter found some good buys on a sale at the Zara store above ground by the Hermitage hotel. The casino is open all night in case you have jetlag, though it won't be as fun during those hours. Your husband may already know that the beach is topless, the downside is it's mostly seniors and kids when my kids & I were there. St Tropez is much better for shopping and beach life.

DAX,
What's that? TOPLESS? Thanks for the warning. I'll find out later if hubby knows. We will arrive on this Saturday so it might be a little too cold for that.
I do appreciate all the feedback from everyone. I don't think we have time for Eze but if the opportunity presents itself and the time works out we will definitely go for it.
we'll let you know when we get back.
