Hi all,

My husband and i will be visiting europe mid october, our flight is to london where we will spend 4 days, our return tkt is from rome... from london, we will be in france then travel to dijon... our trip is final until this point need help after this...!!! We definitely wil be spending time in venice n rome... our confusion is - from dijon, whether we should spend 2 days in luzern, swiz or should we go to milan n spend a day before heading to venice..!!! Or is it better to skip milan as we r travelling to other cities in italy...!!! Also, we were thinking of going to cinque terre in italy, is it worth a visit too...!!!

Dijon to Venice is a 10+hr long trip on train. Luzern means less travel first, but long travel to Venice, while Milano means a long trip to Milano but a short trip to Venezia. It is just a different way to split one L-O-N-G trip.

If you don't have a criteria to choose one over another, how can others help you?

It looks like Luzern and Milano are just way points? Is Dijon just another way point? It would be faster if you, say, complete you France trip in Paris and fly from Paris to Venice.

i wanted to know if we r short of days, it is better to skip milan or luzern... we were thinking to skip milan as we r going to other cities in italy...!!!

Luzern is pretty sounds like you do not have enough time

North of Milan is my fav www.sresa.org for Isola Bella

Many wonderful hotels there...

For best deals I usually stay at the Grand Hotel Dino

in Baveno from 100 euro/nt usually

Milan is pretty around the Duomo otherwise Luzern is prettier

So Stresa for me is where I like to stop along your route

Another Great stop at Garda on your way is www.sirmione.com

Like the Hotel Eden there bout halfway between Milano Venezia

I think any of your train routes to Venice will require training through Milan (probably have to change trains in Milan). Lucerne is more of a detour. I prefer Lucerne over Milan, but since you have to transport through Milan, it might make more sense to drop Lucerne.

I would take Greg's advice and fly from Paris to Venice if you are short of days. Easy Jet from Paris Orly.

it seems that lucerne is a bit out of the way, would it be any good if we went to montreux/lausanne from dijon and then from there go to venice...!!! some of the blogs indicate that if u r travelling from france, one may not fine montreux/lausanne any different as it has french influence... is that true...!!!

also, i would like to ask is it best to use www.sbb.ch website for a train from a city within swiz to italy...!!! or is there any other website...!!! the swiz website only allows booking 30 days from the date of travel...

You can get tickets when you get there, no need to reserve seats ahead of time. Switzerland is the land of train travel so no worries even passes can be bought on the border before entering the country.

Milan is for shopping and international connections so you won't miss much by skipping touring it this trip.

The problem is there may not be a direct train between the eastern most entry point between Italy and Switzerland (near st. moritz i think) and your destination of Venice, forcing you to double back through Milan. You will need to check on trenitalia website to see if there is a direct route from there to Venice or not. If not then you need to go directly south from Luzern and exit through Milan. Make sure to check before you plan the Switzerland route or you end up losing a day. Interlaken region is also very beautiful and there are many places to sleep in this town because it is the tourist hub of Switzerland... if you are short on time that might be a better option for this trip instead of Luzern, its up to you really. If you add up your train travel hours between Luzern-Venice from the information on trenitalia and swiss site you will be able to plan better where to spend the night or if it is doable in one day or not. I think you will enjoy traveling through the swiss alps.

thanks a lot Elyse for your guidance, i am still thinking if it will be worth a trip... also, accomodation in luzern seems to be expensive, what is the best website for accomodation in luzern?

Would you know if Italy has train strikes running currently...!!! i read that in some blogs, so was wondering whether we should book our train tickets or hotel accomodation in italy...
