Manchester United Tickets

My 13 year old son is dying to see a Manchester United game, so I'm looking into getting tickets for a game in April 2009. It looks like they go on sale in February.

But, I read on Fodor's that it's practically impossible to get individual tickets, that they mostly go to season ticket holders. Is that true and is it still the case?

I am willing to be scalped in the parking lot, but it would be a disaster if we were unable to get any tickets at all.

Any suggestions? Thanks so much.

There are brokers who will sell tickets (at quite a premium over face value of course). When we tried to get tickets for an Arsenal game, we were told that pretty much all the seats are sold to season ticket holders, but that they do release about 1500 tickets for "public" sale shortly before the game. However, even those are made available in some distinct order, and I believe you might have to sign up and pay something to even be on the list.

And then I just saw this advertisement while watching (on TiVO) the ManU/Chelsea game:

Thanks for the replies so far, dmlove.

OK. I signed up on the Manchester United site as a member. Currently, the only tickets available to the game we want are Hospitality tickets, very expensive and including a meal, etc.

Any ideas on when individual tickets will be available? Maybe that's what the February date refers to... But, will there be many tickets available then or will it be impossible to get two?

Then, on the viagogo site, which says it is an official site, is a ticket exchange, where season ticket holders can offer individual tickets for sale. However, they are not allowed to be sold until the game is officially sold out. Also, you must be a member to purchase a ticket through the exchange (one ticket per member, so I paid about $100 for my son and I to become members).

Finally, there is the last resort, trying to buy tickets from a scalper right before the game...

I've spent all night looking into this, flights, hotels, etc. and I still am not clear on how best to get Manchester United tickets...

Basically, for normal league games, no tickets go on general sale. Non-season tickets seats are made available to members (which you have just become), but since there are 8-10 times as many members as tickets available, a ballot is held for the lucky few.
Non-league games are often not sold out, but April is right at the end of the season and any cup ties (FA Cup, Champions' League) will be at the final knock-out stage and will be very much in demand, so again no general sale.
There are a lot of sites by ticket agents who sell tickets at a huge premium, but you need to be very careful as most such businesses are unregulated and there's no guarantee you get a ticket.
Viagogo is a legit site for ticket exchange, so it's worth having a go but availablity will be limited (as MU tickets are in demand).
Regular attenders at Old Trafford who aren't season ticket holders often have their own contacts in the trade to get them tickets at a good price or a circle of friends who are willing to let them have their tickets for matches they can't/don't want to attend.
Expensive though they are, club's official hospitality packages are reliable and you are guaranteed a good seat plus meal etc. If you are only going to attend Old Trafford just once in your life, perhaps it's worth while.

Thanks Alec. It is tempting to get a hospitality ticket and be done with it, but it's so-o-o expensive. You've given me a lot to think about.

Getting tickets legitimately for Man Utd is next to impossible. Brokers will flog you tickets for a mint. You could take your chances in the car park, but two together will cost a king's ransom (especially for the Tottenham game on 25/4).

Another thought is that although getting into old Trafford is impossible you might want to consider watching them away. They are at Wigan (which is very near to Manchester) on the 18th April.. Getting tickets for Wigan is pretty easy - even for Man Utd.

They are also at Sunderland on the 11th which is a hard match to get tickets for, but still easier than Man Utd.

You could get tickets for Wigan and if you're heart-set on going to Old Trafford you could take one of the stadium tours.
