Maastricht or ??
Hello fellow travelers. We have traveled to Amsterdam and many towns nearby. This time we will be going back again for a few days in October. We are thinking of going to Maastricht but if we do we would leave on Sunday around 12:00 and get back to Amsterdam Monday evening. Understanding Museums and shops would be closed on Monday we are wondering if rest of the tourist areas, Caves etc. are open. Would it be worth going at all considering our time frame? Any other suggestions for an overnight trip for Sunday -Monday would be appreciated. We have been to Harlem, Delft, Den Hague and Marken, as well as the main Belgian towns. We really like to wander, look at architecture, scenery and enjoy the ambience. We would be taking the train.
Thanks so much.

If you decide on Maastricht then you could certainly take a boat trip along the Maas which could include a visit to the caves.
Maastricht itself is a nice city, but you won't get to see the countryside on such a short trip.
Have a look at www.rederijstiphout.nl for boat trip ideas.
Remember it takes 2 and a half hours on the train from Amsterdam to Maastricht.
If you enjoy modern architecture then Rotterdam is an idea - you could combine it with a visit to Dordrecht for old architecture.
Or go to Leeuwaarden and combine it with say Harlingen and Franeker. Harlingen for old architecure and a livley port with many old boats, and Franeker for the architecture. The wooden planetarium is open on Monday afternoons, and is worth a visit. www.planetarium-friesland.nl/engels.html
Or Utrecht, not so far from Amsterdam, is worth a visit.

I second Utrecht (old historic town) or Rotterdam (new modern city). Maastricht is nice, but indeed a long train-ride from Amsterdam. Utrecht is 30 minutes and Rotterdam about 50 minutes.
On Monday most shops will open around 12.00 (some large shops ealier). On Sundayafternoon shops are open in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. The first Sunday of the month also in utrecht and I believe also Maastricht.
Museums will indeed mostly be closed.
