I checked Mappy and came up with 2 hours and 17 minutes on motorways with 17 euros in tolls.
It would take longer if there were traffic, e.g. Bastille Day weekend or a major sporting event.
Without tolls it was 3 hours and 57 minutes . . . also depending on traffic.
Where did you come up with 7 hours? Just curious.

I was basing 7 hours on a few guide books I'd looked at for the train. I've seen some that say anywhere from 4 to 7 hours from Lyon to Chamonix, nothing quicker. This doesn't make sense if it takes 2.5 hours by car. Can anyone explain why so many guidebooks show it taking so much longer?

I takes about four hours by train, you can find that on on sncf.com. That involves a changeover of 20 min.
Maybe there are some trains that take seven hours if they go real slow and have a lot of stops, but I didn't see any like that. If the guidebook said 4-7, it would be right for the four. Mappy.fr says 2:17, not 1:17--it's about 225 km, so 7 hrs would be awfully long but maybe some routes do that and have a long layover somewhere.
