Looking for a thread...

I'm looking for a thread from a year or so ago about people asking the rude question of How can you afford to travel so often/go to Europe, etc? I've clicked on my name and did not find it so I obviously did not contribute to it. I'm very excited about an upcoming trip (Africa) and don't feel I can talk to anyone about it at work for fear of them asking this question. I just wanted to be prepared with a quick come-back! Does anyone remember this thread?

Thanks alan -- close, but not the one I was thinking of. The replies were geared more toward snippy replies when people have the gaul (sp?) to ask "how can you afford to travel?"

I remember that thread, but I don't think you have to worry about things so much. You must work with very rude people and no one I work with would ever ask such an obnoxious question. I don't think you have to be that creative, if anyone did, you can just say "now why does that concern you?" or simply give them a dirty look and not reply. YOu obviously don't like those people anyway. If you don't like these people why do you feel you should need to talk to them about your trip. You kind of sound like you want to talk about it a lot and go on and on, etc. Mentioning your upcoming vacation time and where you are going is not the same thing as talking about it with people at work. No one I work with would ask such a thing, but no one goes around bending everyone's ear about upcoming vacation plans out of the blue and where they plan to go, either. They might mention where they are going if you ask because you see them with an upcoming vacation time off on the office calendar, but no on goes around initiating conversation with people out of the blue as to their big vacation plans.

So maybe you should think about what you want to do and why you feel a need to talk about this so much at work with people you don't like and can't be asking for information or advice from.

I remember one that dealt with "It must be nice..." statements from folks whenever we talked about an upcoming trip. I clicked on some names that might have contributed (ira, rex, robespierre, suze) but found soooo many posts from each that I gave up. Maybe you are interested enough to wade thru the posts?? I betcha at least one of them replied.

I think the thread you;re looking for got moved to the lounge. And I believe it was started by SeaUrchin, so you might click on her name.

Lucy - That's it!!! Thanks so much.
Christina - it's not that I don't like the people I work with, they just don't/can't travel like we do OR have different priorities. There's no one at my work with the same travel priorities as us and so I go to Fodors to mingle with those of like mind/priorities!

I figure we need to travel while we can and enjoy it while we can. We may need to pinch pennies later and I do not want to live with regret that I wish we would've traveled more when we were younger!

Thanks everyone for their help. I really appreciate it.

So often the people who ask these types of questions tend to spend their money on expensive hobbies, clothes, cars, etc. It's all a matter of priorities. I always just say that we don't have any expensive hobbies, etc. Plus, there's no better way to spend time and create memories for our family.

One other comment I came upon many years ago (in our early 20's) was one women who knew my husband and I were traveling to Italy and looking for budget lodging. She said, "We're going to wait until we can do it right." Well, I've been many times since then and now we can afford as much luxury as we want. I wonder if she's still waiting....?

dgg - what's "right?" I don't need a lot of luxury (nor do I want to pay for it) especially in a hotel because I'm not in the room that much. I want to explore, soak up the culture and enjoy being somewhere without responsibilities. That's my escape!! And if someone waits until they can do it "right" they'll never make it! Go when you can go - there is no "right" way!

Hi jill_h

I travel to Europe once a year and I take at least 2 trips a year in the United States. Whenever someone says to me "it must be nice", I reply "it is better than nice, it is wonderful." I am of the firm belief that it is no ones business how I spend my money but mine.
