Betsy, In April of 1999 we stayed at the Hotel Alleehaus at Marienstrasse 7. It's well located for walking around the city, has a great breakfast in a pleasant dining room and has parking in their garage behind the hotel. The rate, for 2, I think was $80.Their fax is 0761/387 60-99, I don't remember what the country code is to call or fax from the US. Incidentally, in Germany an "allee" is a street lined with trees on both sides.

We stayed at the Hotel Schwarzwaelder Hof a few years ago. It is located in a superb position right in the old town on the street that runs behind the cathedral and near some good places for food and beer. We could see the cathedral from our room. The address is Herrenstrasse 43, but the actual entrance is on a sidestreet. We payed about $100 a night for two. The hotel has 40+ beds, had good service, was quite clean, had a restaurant, and a pretty decent buffet breakfast (included with room). Restrooms were in the hall if that matters, but we did not find that to be a problem at all. You might be able to park on the street by the hotel - I am not sure. Take a look at www.freiburg-online.com to see other hotels by price range. This is a superb guide to the city.

Thanks so much Richard and Dan. This was just the information I needed. We loved Freiburg when we were there for the day several years ago. The market around the cathedral is fantastic. Can't wait to get back and stay a little longer. We leave for London on Wednesday and will gradually make our way to Germany.
