Last-minute Scavi?

Hi - I will be in Rome in mid- to late Nov of this year. I'm aware of the procedure to book Scavi tours at St. Peter's, but because of other commitments I have in Rome, I can't be sure when exactly (or even if) I would be able to take this tour. I've heard that not all the Scavi tours actually fill up. Has anyone succeeded in getting a walk-in Scavi tour on the day of the tour? If so, how did you do it? (Obviously I would not have any reservation paperwork to show the guards.) Or, is this pretty much out of the question?

Thanks!

I know that there is very often room on some of the Scavi tours but getting past the guard could be dicey. It may not be too late to email for a reservation, even if you get one for the wrong day or time - the copy of the email may get you past the guard to go in and plead your case. Just to let you know tho - - -the people who work in that office are NOT friendly and realy have NO sense of humor so don't joke with them!

You might have a chance and it's worth a try. The tour was the highlight our trip in May.

The guards weren't too strict on allowing people into the office. There was a group of 5 who didn't have their confirmation with them and they allowed them in the office. We even had people who didn't have tickets try to join the group! Of course, the guide made them go back but this is AFTER the tour had begun and none of them could come up with tickets.

Good luck!

Your hotel may be able to call ahead and check for openings for you.
