La Calcina and Giorgione booked - next best choice?

I know, I know - I'd been warned about this. We just couldn't settle on dates/flights soon enough - so now my top two hotel choices are booked. We will be in Venice Oct 25-28th (3 nights).

What would you look to next? Hotel Marconi is 500EU a night (we're looking to stay at $180EU or under). Leon Bianco has two rooms, but one is the 'side' canal view that is listed here as depressing and not worth it.

Pensione Accademia seems to have a bad website - did I find the right one? I know it gets rave reviews, but it doesn't look like much.

Other ideas - please???

Check out Casa Rezzonico in Dorsoduro. It gets good reviews here and on tripadvisor.com. We absolutely loved our stay there, and it was 145E/night, although the price may have gone up since May 2004.

How about Hotel Ala? I and others on this forum have stayed there and liked it. Great location and the rooms should be in your price range.

Wow...Marconi is 500 euro a night?
That's quite a jump from 180 euro four years ago!

Try the Hotel Wildner...near San Marco....and in October the crowds have thinned out...plus front rooms have incredible views!!

We really enjoyed the Hotel American in Dorsoduro. Room 101 is lovely with three balconies over one of Dorsoduro's larger canals. The room was very quiet, nicely decorated, and they offer free internet in the lobby. We paid around 210/night (I believe) in the high season last year and booked via veniceby.com. Good luck!

I just returned from the Hotel American and highly recommend it. We were there for 4 nights and returned after visiting for Florence for one night.

Because August is off season, we got the very good rate of 95 euros per night, plus 10 percent off the 4 consecutive nights. Our first four nights, we had rooms that were not on the canal, and they were beautiful and very comfortable. When we returned, 2 of our rooms were upgraded to the canal view--but for the same price. They were very big, but for the extra 50 euros that they would have cost, I would not have booked them. Our third room, #207 was very small, but if you have been to Europe, you know that this is usual. The bathrooms in all 6 rooms that we stayed in were new and very beautiful. The breakfast and breakfast room are very nice. The staff was helpful.

I liked the location which is just over the Accademia bridge. I have been to Venice many times, but this is my first time to stay in this area.

Pensione Accademia also sold out... Ca Rezzinoco OK for 135EU. Going to check Wilder before confirming. The American's website isn't working Can get to the home page and see they changed the name in July, but nothing else will load - and now home page is gone too!

Bailey, I hadn't seen you 'here' in a while. We used to converse on email when I had a different screen name here (KAMG) - you come to my city for 'football' camp if that strikes your memory! Perhaps you are in town now and we could meet up for a drink next week? I'm going away for the weekend tonight.

thanks again to all - I'll be sure to report back!

Tried the Wilder again... worked! BUT - is 250EU without view

The Ala is a Best Western property and thought it gets good reviews, would feel weird to stay in a chain based hotel in Venice. (just a thing I have I can't get over - sorry!)

Wilder or Rezzonico it will be between.

There is nothing "Best Western" about the Ala, except the affiliation with the name.It is in a very good location. I stayed in the Best Western Diana, and it was not an American Best Western.

Try Hotel American website again. I just went, and it worked fine. They have some specials that may work for you.

travelphile, marty is right, many European hotels affiliate themselves with chains like Best Western or Comfort Inn, and they remain charming local hotels, often in historic buildings. The affiliation is for purchasing power, or to reduce marketing costs.

I checked the Marconi again... one room is 500EU per night, and 580EU for the superior. It even totals it out to over 1500EU for me

I wondered if I had the wrong view on the BW's... I guess I do. If I have a chance I'll zip a request to the Ala as well.

You guys on the board are great! As an FYI, my grandma just had a relative die, and she had been dealing with that. I hadn't told her we have flights and 3 out of 5 places booked... she was estactic this morning and it really made her day - which made mine

There's a hotel that sits right next door to La Calcina. I know nothing about it other than it has the similar wonderful location on the Guidecca canal. You might check it out at: www.pensioneseguso.it

Thanks suze... looked into it and the hubby gave it a nope. Trip advisor reviews say you need to 'look' for the charm, but it is a great value. With all the other great recoommendations, I want my other 3 travel partners to congratulate me on the pick from right when we arrive.

My ego is now involved with the trip planning

Before you book, check back at La Calcina and Giorgione to see if there have been cancellations.

Haven't heard from the Wildner, but also sent a request to the Ala, Ca' Amadi. Ca' Amadi sent me rates on double and superior, and might take the double, superior was 240EU.

I feel bad requesting quotes from so many, but I suppose many people inquire at more than one.

I was wonderinfg about Marconi too. How did you get €500 pe night? I tried their site and they availability :
Double superior : €290.00
Double Grand Canal view : €360.00
Their quad is often €450.

Still largely over your budget €180.00 though.
