Kinsale Ireland to stay or not to stay.
On a forthcoming 3 week trip to Ireland , we had planned to stay fore 2 nights in
Kinsale on way to Kenmare. Have read a few lukewarm comments, and would appreciate some honest feedback from those who have been there.

We were on a 16 day trip, and headed to Kinsale so the two husbands of the group could play golf at Old Head. I was the only one who did the walking tour mentioned from the visitor's center - obviously, I was traveling with heathens! I found the history fascinating and the tour guide terrific. That said, I'd have to say: this was the low point of our trip! I had heard "gourmet capital of Ireland" - we didn't have as much luck with good food as in the rest of the country, and actually (this was Sept 2008) it seemed quite down on its luck somehow. I'd still recommend it but I'd personally give it only one night.

I enjoyed it for 1 night as a stopover to Kenmare as well. I found it to be an enjoyable stay. We had a nice dinner and took a nice long walk around town and down by the harbor. Dinner was at http://www.jimedwardskinsale.com/ I had the Monkfish, and remember it to be pretty tasty.
I think I would have enjoyed a second day in Kinsale, if we had the time. But as jo_ann points out, it's all opinion

We stayed for one night. Now perhaps it was the weather (rainy) or the fact that half of the streets seemed to be under construction, but we were not impressed. We did have a nice dinner and a nice (damp) walk around town. To be fair, maybe if we had stayed longer we would have enjoyed it more.

Kinsale is the only place in Ireland that my husband doesn't want to visit again. It just felt less friendly than Clifden or Doolin or Dingle or Kenmare. Out of 2 trips, it was the only town where we never found a pub where we felt comfortable. just my two cents.

This May we are planning three weekday nights in Kinsale We know it's touristy, but Michelle from the "Ireland, Yes!" website says it's much better during the week. Charles Fort sounds fascinating, there is road bowling on Friday afternoons, and we'll have the time to discover some non-tourist pubs.
