We are thinking of taking a jaunting car ride in Killarney. I have been in contact with a company that will pick us up at our hotel, Cahernane House, and take us through Killarney National Park for an hour for €40. My question is would you reserve this in advance? And is this an average price? Or would you pick up a jaunting car in town?

Also, would it be better to do the Gap of Dunloe tour and ride the jaunting car on that? We are doing a Ring of Kerry tour in Killarney the day before.

Any thoughts or suggestions? As always, thank you for your help.

We did a Jaunty car in October of 2012. This was their slow season. We were advised to negotiate a price with the driver which we did. We stayed at the Killarney International Hotel which was across the street from where several drivers were parked. I forget the actual price (15 euros person for 4 of us?) but we worked out all the little details (which part of park to see by car, would he wait for us while we toured Muckross House, etc) Bottom line -- I would wait and negotiate. By the way, the Jaunty Car was worth the money and the experience (romantic too!). My drivers name was Mike (forgot the Horse's name -- Rusty I think). He was a third generation driver.

My vote would be to do the Gap of Dunloe tour! It was our favorite thing that we did in Ireland, absolutely outstanding and spectacular scenery thru the 7 miles of the trip. I am sure that Killarney National Park is a beautiful drive also but there was something magical about the Gap tour. We ended up at a lake where we got into a rowboat which dropped us off at Ross Castle. We would have toured the Castle and/or Muckross House but we didn't have time. Next time we visit Killarney we will do this.

It looks like it is about E47. (pony trap ride is E20. payable to driver that day) for the total tour, bus to the site, gap tour and boat ride back to Ross Castle, bus back to your hotel. Seems like a better deal.

We were staying at Lake Hotel in Killarney, took a cab to Kate Kearney's cottage and got on the pony trap there.

I have walked the Gap twice and I believe that is the only way to do it. You would be amazed at what you miss in the pony cart. It is seven miles, half uphill and and half downhill. My wife and I are in our sixties and she is no athlete so it is not a difficult walk. The boat ride at the endis also lovely. Have fun
