Isle of Skye
I will be visiting Edinburgh, Harrogate and the Isle of Skye in October. So far, my itinerary includes Edinburgh (Roxburghe Hotel), then Harrogate (Old Swan), followed by a stay on the Isle of Skye from 6 October through 9 October...after which I head back to Edinburgh (The George Hotel) prior to my return to the U.S.
I've learned so much here in this forum and am very much looking forward to my visit to the Isle of Skye. The places I think I might like to stay include the Flodigarry Hotel, Dunvegan Castle or the Hotel Eilean Iarmain. But, I am open to recommendations. (Please!)
My trouble is that---though I have contacted several properties---I have not yet been able to confirm accommodations for the Isle of Skye. Perhaps this is because I will be traveling on my own, and the tarifs seem to be oriented toward pairs of people...or more.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you contacted the Hotel Castle Duntulm?
I'm assuming you are going to have a car, since some of the places you mention (like the Flodigarry) require it. If you don't have a car, you probably want to stay in Broadford or Portree (there is Portree Hotel or Portree Inn, I forget which).
Have you done a web search for bed-and-breakfasts or guest houses? There a so many b-and-b's in Skye, I'm sure you won't have any trouble finding accommodation in October, and as a solo traveler, you might enjoy the more home-like environment.

I have done searches for properties on Skye, as well as looking into the recommnedations posted here in these forum pages. Though I will be traveling solo, I'm actually looking forward to, perhaps, a remote, historic location. I'll be absorbing atmosphere and enjoying the settings I visit...all oriented around improving the integrity of a novel I'm writing...and hoping to complete by the end of October. With this in mind, the gentle, family hubbub of a B&B, while cozy, might be distracting from the place.
Thank you for the great recommendations; I will investigate further. Also, I appreciate the tip about needing a car.

You have, I think, identified the two nicest places on the island in the Eilean Iarmain and the Flodigarry. Both are slightly offcentre, but really there's nowhere FANTASTIC in Portree.
They're both a different style to the other two you mention- the Flodigarry less so than the Eilean Iarmain, but both lovely, really.

Hi DebraMartin
We stayed at the Flodigarry for 3 nights in September 2004 and really loved it. The setting is gorgeous and the hotel itself is lovely.
All of our meals were excellent - very attentive service. A real country house hotel with all the trimmings. We had a superior room and it was very comfortable.
We also stayed in Portree at the Rosedale Hotel on the harbour and enjoyed it very much. It's a different experience obviously, as it is right in the town itself, but a nice contrast to the country setting of Flodigarry.
Scotland is beautiful - have a wonderful trip.

Have they simply not answered - or have they said they are fully booked? Many smaller UK hotels/B&Bs don't respond to e-mail as quickly as one might hope. Some only have one or two staff members who check the e-mail, and some even use a web master and don't check it themselves. If you haven't heard back - just pick up the phone and give them a call.
You should be able to find singles in most properties - and those who don't have singles are usually quite happy to rent a double for single occupancy -- especially in teh off season for October.
How are you planning to get from Harrogate up to Skye - It is a very long journey.

Just a note about Eileen larmain. We stumbled across it one day on our search to see a lighthouse. At the end of a 2 mile single track country road on the water's edge is a small b and b, Eileen larmian. It looked so cute and quaint from the outside. the best part was, it has another building across the little road from the main house that has suites. The front yard of this other annex is a large nice grassy area looking across the bay to a small white lighthouse!! (Can't think of the name right now.) What a nice view!! If you can swing the price for one of the suites, it would be well worth it.
The main house is very small and is right on the road across from the harbor. Again, it is down a 2 mile single lane road but hardly any traffic at all.
