Ischia/Capri

I am trying to plan a honeymoon in Italy. Right now I'm thinking of 6 nights in Capri and 4 in Positano. My travel agent suggested that the Island of Ischia might be a nice alternative to Capri. She said it's probably less crowded and we can still do day trips to Capri. I'd appreciate any help and suggestions. - Thanks, Mark

Ischia is a much bigger island than Capri, but is very beautiful. For some reason, Ischia attracts mainly German-speaking visitors (if you don't speak Italian, people will assume you speak German). Ischia is big enough to have several resorts around its coast, each no doubt different in character. Whether you'd want to stay there depends on your tastes and motives.
In summer, it's easy to do a day trip from Ischia to Capri, but in winter, you need to go via the mainland.

I've stayed on Capri before, but this summer spent five nights on Ischia. I really enjoyed Ischia, but it is no Capri. GeoffHammer is right about German. The night before we left, talking with our waiter in Naples, Italy he asked why we were going to Ischia and actually said, "you aren't German, are you?" Everyone on Ischia approached us speaking German. Not that there's anything wrong with that, and in fact if you're going to Europe why not be with Germans instead of Americans?

The problem with daytrips to Capri is that you will be on Capri with all the other daytrippers when it is the most crowded. Why try to avoid the crowds and then go somewhere when it is most crowded? Capri is most special in the evening and night when the daytrippers have left. In fact it might make more sense to do your day trips to Ischia (and Procido) from Capri!

There is no doubt that Ischia is more laid back than Capri -- fewer fancy restaurants and upscale hotels. But at the same time it could be considered much more "real" Italy, if you can figure out what that means.

I'm not sure I've helped you, just some isolated ramblings of thoughts from me.

I agree with Patrick...When will you be honeymooning? That might help you make a wise decision...From May--August it is plenty crowded, but Patrick's right, the night scene in Capri is absent of daytrippers...
We were there in April in the less-crowded shoulder season which we enjoyed.

Never been to Capri, but I certainly did enjoy Ischia and Procida.
Congrats!

We just returned from Italy. We loved Capri and also stayed there for six nights and are happy we did. There was so much to do on the island but we also took a hydrofoil to the mainland. My personal opinion is that for my husband and I 4 nights in Positano would be too much. We liked it there but not enough to stay 4 nights. I found any advice i got from this forum was excellent and many contributors on this forum recommend the town of Ravello as being very nice and very romantic. We did not get that far down the coast but plan to stay there part of the time our next trip. Remember that it is just my opinion regarding Positano. Capri would be very special for a honeymoon.
