Look at this site
www.hallstatt.net
It will provide a hotel list for your review.
The site also has info on winter in Hallstatt. It is very, very quiet.
Remember that many sights are closed during winter- caves, mine etc. Some accomodations and dining too.
You can also have less than great weather especially in Jamuary with grey sky and fog perhaps . It is possible that you may see little of the mountain tops due to low clouds.
Your choice to go but in my opinion certainly not the best season for a visit.
Perhaps time spent in Salzburg could be nicer.

thank you, your advice were very helpful, but i would like to ask about the weather and climate there, like the average day temperature, or if the forest above hallstatt is deciduous (because that could propably ruin the awesome scenery in the pics)and what activities are provided in hallstatt on the winter time...? thank you!

Hi,
We visited Hallstatt in late October a few years ago. It was VERY quiet. I can't imagine what there will be to do in Hallstatt in January. It's a small, but quaint, village. It takes about 10 or 15 minutes to walk the village end to end. For us, even on a beautiful day weather wise, an afternoon was more than enough. There are closer places to visit that are just as charming.

The photo given above should not be used as a typical Hallstatt winter day.
Who knows when this was taken.
if you have not already reviewed the Hallstatt website - visit it.
It offers webcam pictures clearly indicating the now weather and look. One view is somewhat similar to the photo mentioned.
Those trees shown in orange/ yellow leaves are hardwoods now.
Thus the wooded scenery changes in process of the change to winter.
In addition some soft wood Larch too that will change to yellow and also lose their needles.
The website for Hallstatt also has a " winter " heading to review.
Nearest area with weather history data is Salzburg - not close and a little warmer.
Average January
day temps 2.3 grad celcius
night -5 grad celcius
days of precipitation
16
Perhaps worth some hours on a day trip in sunny winter weather - but not more in my opinion. In poor weather clouds etc. best elsewhere.

I was there four years ago in very early January - spent an afternoon in Hallstatt - I loved it, it was absolutely picture book pretty. The weather was very low cloud (obstructing the tops of the mountains) and it was lightly snowing. It was almost entirely free of tourists. We stayed for lunch, visited churches, wandered around, saw the 'bones', bit of shopping. It was truely wonderful and I would definitely go again. I think if you spend one night there, it would be perfect. Bad Ischl is also a nice town to visit and very close to Hallstatt. Enjoy it, I think its well worth it.

hey nz101. On reading your previous message on this post your experience in Hallstatt could be very helpful to me. I intend to travel there for one night with a friend in early January. Obviously the weather cannot be predicted and I expect it to be quieter in terms of tourists as you've mentioned. In this case, is there still plenty of places to socialise open and available? For example to enjoy a nice meal and have a few beers?? Any further information would be very much appreciated.

Um, it's the mountains in winter. It will be cold, leafless and quite possibly snowing in a small town with not much to do. Is that what you want?
Of course there are restaurants and places to have a beer - just like every other town in europe.
