Is Rothenburg THAT bad?
I've never been to The Romantic Road part of Germany and really want to be immersed in the wood frame architecture. Many posts say R. is too touristy, but others say it is touristy for a reason. The pictures of R. are beautiful. I usually am an "off the beaten path" traveler, but for some places putting up with crowds is worth it. I will be there next June (early part) for about 4 days. Any advise???
THANK YOU!!!!

We loved Rothenburg. Yes, it is crowded. Yes, it is touristy. Hang in there until the crowds thin out as the evening approaches. Walk the walls in the early morning. If the crowds get to you, there is always delicious German beer available.

If you identify what is about the "touristy" place you don't like, you can possibly avoid that aspect of the location.
If it is the "crowd" you don't care for, you can stay overnight and enjoy the place before and after the tourist buses are in town. I stayed inside the wall and yes, it is very crowded during the day, so I woke up early in the morning and walked inside and outside the wall to enjoy this medieval town without any tourists. I do this at most places to get take pictures without tourists.

Totally agree with Tom & Greg---if you stay overnight, the evenings are delightful and the mornings are peaceful. We were there in June '06---it was certainly not crowded to the point of me never wanting to go there! It is definitely worth visiting.

I think 4 days might be too much for Rothenburg, unless you are using it as a base and traveling elsewhere in addition to R. I was there overnight in June 07 and found it interesting but certainly not worth 4 days. IMO it's a day trip, stay and enjoy the evening walk with the nightman (kitchy but fun) see St Jakob's church and walk the wall. Just watch your head when you walk the wall, there are some fairly low beams that I had the misfortune of meeting head on.

Rothenburg is a charming town - but in high season in the middle of the day will be filled with tourists. It is definitely a place I would visit (perhaps in the late afternoon and overnight) but no someplace I wold stay to tour the Romantic Road. For that you need a car and hotels in several different towns.

I agree that 4 days is too long for Rothenburg. I also agree that it is a charming town in the morning and evening, but even during the day, if you stay away from the center of town, you'll find charming little areas that are very quiet.
I think every European traveler should visit Rothenburg.

Thanks for all your responses! You have confirmed what I was
kind of thinking - beautiful spot for 2 days and stay inside the walls for the mornings and evenings. Any great hotel or restaurant ideas? Also, where would you spend 2 more days?
Thanks!!!

I stayed 2 nights at the Romantik Hotel Markusturm. Very cute, very clean, big room, and a huge bathroom. Restaurant was also very good!

I loved Rothenburg, but I agree with the above posters. Four days is too much - I recommend one or two nights max. We stayed at the Hotel Gotisches Haus and loved it (http://www.gotisches-haus.de/). Very beautiful and in a great location. Definitely take the night watchman's tour - very entertaining. We ate dinner at the Eisenhut Hotel and it was delicious.

In R. we stayed here:
http://www.hotelclub.net/hotel.reser...Rothenburg.htm
3 blocks from an entrance to the walled city. It was very clean, reasonably priced and included a great breakfast.
Garmisch is another beautiful Bavarian city you may want to consider. I believe they have an annual Strauss festival in June with free music.
Enjoy your stay no matter where you decide. It's a great time of year to explore Bavaria and the Tyrolean country. However, I'm not sure how busy Bavaria will be with the Passion play taking place.

If you are there the first week in June, it won't be as crowded as other parts of June. I have been in Rothenburg when it was flooded with tourists, but never regretted being there. It does thin out in the evening. You might consider renting a bike and going on a bike ride in the country.
I like the Hotel Hornburg, located right outside the wall.
