THank you for all your help, and for helping junk4rp because I am following his searches closely. My problem is that my relatives are far flung. I was going to book a week in London and travel but I now think this is unworkable. So, its looks like I might book a hotel for the first three nights for recovery and some quick sight seeing, then my Aunt lives in Milton Keynes so I would head there for one or two nights - is it feasible to stay in the Cotswolds and travel to Milton Keynes/? My concern would be that there would be a family dinner etc and that I may be travelling back late at night, perhaps I should just stay in Milton Keynes? My Aunts children live within an hours travel from her but as she is frail they will be travelling to her location.

After that I have Cousins in Nottingham and Woldingham. Not sure yet if the Nottingham connection will travel to London, its seems there is a reluctance to travel long distances in England. I am somewhat dependant upon my relatives to finalise the dates so booking accommodation at this point is out of the question.

I am travelling in April, will I be able to pick up a hotel in Milton Keynes and then Edinburgh on the hop? We are going to Paris but I thought that I would just lock in those dates regardless. Oh, do I have to book the train back from Paris in advance?

You should be ok, unless you clash with Easter, but even then you'll probably be alright.

Yes, book the train from Paris as far in advance as possible if you want a good fare. It gets much more expensive the closer you are to the travel date. There's also a (small) risk if you leave it to the day of travel, that you might not get a ticket.

Let's see what I can answer among the many questions!:

Milton Keynes is 80 miles from Cirencester and depending on traffic can take around two hours each way. The nearest station is 5 miles away and will involve a couple of changes to Milton Keynes and about 3 hours. Coming back after dinner may not be possible or more relevantly desirable.

As far as hotels are concerned: if your stay is at Easter, then you'll need to book hotels to be sure of a decent standard. The rest of April will be less busy, but it depends on the weather and when kids are off school.

Nottingham to Londo St Pancras is a two hour journey by rail. Who knows how long by road. We are not reluctant to travel long distances in the UK, we just try and avoid journeys that we know are going to be horrendous by road, like Nottingham-London.

THank you, I know that it may be difficult to travel from Nottingham to London but I was hoping that if I could fly for 24 hrs to see them, well anyway, we should go and see where Robin Hood came from!So down to Milton Keynes, up to Nottingham then to Glasgow and Edinburgh, I'll have to check the rail connections from Nottingham to Glasgow then fly to Paris, this is so exciting!

London to Nottingham is about 2 hours by road on the M1 motorway. However there are a lot of roadwork’s on this road at the moment with almost continuous average speed cameras 50 mph so it can take much longer. A recent road trip to Leeds took me 7 hours last Autumn.
