Ireland and Amsterdam - 10 days
Hello fellow travelers,
My husband (25 & 30yrs old) and I are planning a trip to Ireland and Amsterdam this August. We thought we would split our time equally in each place. We're flying into Dublin first. Any advice on areas to travel to in Ireland? Since we'll just have the 5 days and there's so much to see, it's a little overwhelming. We like to drink and have fun but also like to walk around and sight see.
Would be so grateful for any advice you might have on either location. Or, if it seems like Ireland would be it's own trip (but I am really hoping we can do it this trip), are there other areas around Amsterdam that might be better spent bc of the time restriction?
Thanks so much,
Marie

I've been to the Netherlands many times and I can't see how you could spend 5 days just in Amsterdam. I think 2 days in Amsterdam would be sufficient and then you could spend the other days driving around and seeing the countryside of the Netherlands.
If you base yourself in/around Dublin for 5 days, you could spend 2 days sightseeing in Dublin and the remaining 3 days doing day tours--Glendalough, Newgrange and Belfast are easy to do in a day via guided tour, private car and/or public transportation.

Re the Ireland leg of your trip, if your plan is to do some wandering about and being sociable (inside and outside the pub), perhaps places like Glendalough and Newgrange might not be quite what's required.
I would suggest dividing your time between Dublin and Galway -no need for car rental as they are well connected by bus and rail. In Galway you are at the gateway to both the Aran Islands and the Cliffs of Moher, two of the west coasts major attractions, with many tour coach/ferry options in August.
Both Dublin and Galway are well supplied with hostelries should you succumb to the temptation of a pub crawl. The Dublin Literary Pub Crawl is very popular with those who like an organised evening out (all in the interest of culture, of course.....)

We spent 5 nights in Amsterdam, and loved it. One day we took a trip to Vollendam via bus and boat. One evening a canal tour through Amsterdam.
Otherwise, we fell in love with walking around Amsterdam and enjoying its tranquil beauty and lovely people. Marvelous upscale restaurants, too.
Some people love the Venice canals. I prefer Amsterdam's.
