Ira & Bob help with Italy Itinerary
Thanks to all for your replies for your my italy honeymoon question on Friday.

Ira & Bob asked a few questions: I omitted Venice from my honeymoon becuase I hope to do Northern Italy next year. My average hotel price per night is about $400, though I would spend $1000 per night in Ravello at Sasso.
I'm going to spend 15 nights in Italy on my honeymoon and I've narrowed my cities to:
1) Florence
2) Elsewhere in Tuscany
3) Rome
4) Positano or Ravello.
How do you suggest I fly. Bob mentioned something, but I'm unsure what he meant.
Land Rome--to Florence--3
Get car--to Tuscany--4
Drive to Sorrento--drop car--4
Train to Rome--last 4 nites

It seems to me what Bob meant is fly to Rome and then take a train to Florence, where you will spend 3 nights. Then rent a car to spend 4 nights in Tuscany. Drive to Sorrento and drop off car. Take the train back to Rome for the last 4 nights.
I can't imagine spending $1000 a night for a hotel room. What makes it that special?
From Sorrento you'll have to arrange to get to Positano or Ravello by car service (or you could take the bus, but I don't guess many people take the bus to $1000/night hotels!).
In Florence check out Hotel Lungarno. You can get a very nice room with a balcony on the Arno for your budget.
If you're looking for hotel suggestions, you might repost with a title asking for room suggestions in Rome, Florence and ??? Then elaborate on your price range in your question. Many people will have good advice besides Bob and Ira.

Catbert - thanks for your reply. Both Ira and Bob had written questions to me friday, which I "just" had a chance to reply to now.
It's my honeymoon and we've saving up to splurge in one city and spend $1000 per night to get a beautiful larger room with a view, but just because we are able to splurge doesnt mean we arent happy to take a bus through town.

Are you set on Ravello on the Amalfi Coast? It is beautiful of course, but high above the sea and there are far fewer "close activities" than if you were to stay in Positano. Le Sirenuse in Positano is also a 5 star hotel and there are others in/near Positano.
From a base like Positano you could still easily get to Ravello to visit, but you would also be more central for visiting places like Capri. Amalfi (town) is easily reached from both Positano and Ravello.
Of course if you just wish to stay in Ravello and relax the entire time (little sightseeing) then the Sasso would be perfect.
I actually found Sorrento to be the best located town in that you could easily get to Pompei, Capri, and any of the Amalfi Coast towns. But on the flip side, Sorrento is a much larger town that either Positano or Ravello and doesn't have quite the level of charm. Hence my recommendation for Positano as your Amalfi Coast base.

There are dozens of glowing reviews on www.tripadvisor.com and I have personally stepped into the hotel to check it out (for future visits) and was quite impressed.
I believe the rates for their suite (with jacuzzi) are in the 275€ per night range.

Hi nat,
Have you also considered the Villa San Michele in Florence for your splurge night?
You can get a Queen size sea view room at the Sasso for only 500E. Use some of the money you save for a driver from Positano to Ravello.

I was thinking my splurge city would be a more relaxing city since there was a greater chance I'd be in my room relaxing. Villa San Michelle looks incredible, but I suspect I'd be busy sightseeing...

after the $1000. a night hotel room request, I may reconsider my 50th wedding anniversary pizza margharita dinner in Sorrento October 1st this year....maybe we'll order two pizzas.

I am told that you get amazing views of Florence from the VSM, especially the pool and the loggia.
It will give you a day to relax after your 3 days in Rome.
You can then check out, visit Florence for a while, pick up the car and go off to Tuscany.
If you still want to stay at the Sasso, I suggest that you drop the car in Salerno, take the ferry to Amalfi and a cab up to the Sasso.
Better views, more convenient than coming from Sorrento.

I may splurge in Positano/Le Sireneuse or Il San Pietro since I could access Capri, Almafi and Ravello easier than staying in Ravello.
I was considering staying at the Hotel Regina Bagolioni in Rome. I figured I wont be there much and this might be a decent option. What do you think?

Hi Natalie,
As a former Italy honeymooner myself (June 2004), I'd definitely spring for Le Sirenuse in Positano. The quality of the hotel is viturally the same as that of Palazzo Sasso in Ravello but the location (Positano) is soooooo much more convenient. I just think if you're going to be there 4 days it would be nice if you didn't spend a good portion of every day trying to get places because the transportation routes were difficult/inconvenient.

P.S. Forgot to mention I looked inside Le Sirenuse when we were in Positano in May 2005. It looks beautiful, amazing really.
We are not 5 star hotel people except for business travel when the company pays, but this hotel really did look top notch.

I see you are becoming more realistic in your idea of splurge hotels.
If you would like a very nice hotel with the same view as from the Sireneuse for about 1/3 the price, I can highly recommend Le Sirene in Praiano. Room 12 has a large bathroom and a large, private balcony overlooking The Sirens.
