I'm puzzled about some words and a symbol on RENFE.
I've been trying to make reservations on RENFE, and on a couple of lines for trains going from Barcelona to Girona, there is a triangle with an exclamation point inside it and the words, "enlace int."
Can anyone explain the meaning of this? I know the triangle with the exclamation mark means caution, and that "enlace" means intersection or junction, but I don't understand what RENFE is telling me.

Hi,
I jsut went and took a look. When I click on the triangle it says this:
" Enlace Internacional en Figueres V. con trenes TGV a Paris. Temporalmente los billetes para el trayecto internacional deben adquirirse en las Estaciones. Más información en Horarios y Precios de la www.renfe.com "
It's saying that there's an intl connection in Figueres (the stop after Girona) with the TGV trains to Paris and that temporarily the tickets for that intl segment must be acquired at the train stations.
So, I dont think it impacts at all the Barcelona to Girona segment.

I believe the rail line between Barcelona and Girona is not part of the RENFE system and that is why there are limited trains.

The Spanish railway system has (up to) three categories, which are usually reflected by up to three different ticket counters in the stations (at least in the larger ones like Barcelona Sants).
AVE / Larga Distancia (Highspeed and Long Distance trains)
Only for those you can buy tickets in advance. And you have to have reservations, e.g. for the highspeed/AVE network to go from Barcelona to Madrid.
Media Distancia (abbr. as MD, Regional, or Regional Express trains in timetables)
These tickets cannot be bought in advance, but only at the stations. The tickets are not restricted to certain trains but are good for the day you bought them. You simply buy them from a machine (or a desk displaying "Media Distancia" or "MD") and go. There are no discounts, always a fixed price.
In Barcelona, these trains also call at the local downtown stations like Passeig de Gracia. Click train number to see the station it calls at. So you do not have to trek to Barcelona's main station Sants if you live closer to any other the trains call at.
Finally, you have in larger conurbations like Barcelona a network of suburban trains, called Cercanías (or Rodalies in Catalunya).
This network is integrated into the Greater Barcelona transit network, which means that tickets like the T-10 which you use for metro or buses in Barcelona proper are also valid on Rodalies trains within the same zone, e.g. for going to El Prat intl airport.
So, if you wish to go from Barcelona to Girona, just go to the station, get your ticket, and hop on the next MD or Regional train (NOT on any International, Talgo, or Estrella train), of which there are 1-2 per hour going to/via Girona.

You can purchase MD tickets in advance. I'm looking at traveling between Sevilla and Cadiz and both the Alvia and MD trains are available for purchase on the web. The MD seats are not discounted though.

Thanks so much for your help on this. I have printed this information, but I think I'll probably be well advised just to buy the tickets the day before I want to go.
I'm having difficulty getting tickets to Cuenca also, though I have been able to buy a ticket to Málaga.
I arranged a flight from Málaga to Barcelona on Ryanair, and I must say that I think their website is a mess. It's hard to just buy a ticket and pay for it without going through a lot of hoops. I mean, buy a suitcase on the Ryanair website? Please!
