If you could write a book or paint a picture of your favorite place in Italy, what would you write about/paint?
It would be a self-portrait of me, just relaxing in a little outdoor cafe, and reading, enjoying a cappucino, watching the world go by, perhaps with the Colosseum in the background, and I'd have a little contented smile on my face. All would be well with the world.

Procida, that unspoiled little fisherman's island near Capri and Ischia in the Bay of Naples already looks like something Monet might have painted, with the washed-out watercolors of the buildings and the glistening sea. So I'd just have to take a photo.

I would paint Venice in the winter at sunset, when the mist clears and the sky turns pink; the trees swaying in the scirocco in Puglia at the moorish hotel, Masseria San Domenico; at Lago di Garda, the white mountains coming right into the blue, blue lake; the risotto with perch at Verbano on Lake Maggiore ( I take pictures of my food in Italy! lol); and anything on the Amalfi Coast and Capri...

oops - there I go dreaming again...

;-))

Buon Giorno,
After 18 trips to Italy, 1st generation, parents from Rome, I would paint a picture of the Amalfi Drive, in a restaurant in Positano, overlooking the Bay of Naples.
Or, I would write about a sunny afternoon in the Piazza Navona in Rome, at Restaurante Tre Scalina, dining outside on grilled fish and having Tartufo for dessert, and just watching the sights.
A vivid painting of giant multi-colored snowflakes falling in Venice. It was quite dark that January afternoon. We were in one of those tiny passages, twinkling white lights strung above us, shops full of brightly colored lights. The reflection from the shops lit up the snowflakes and we watched in amazement as pink, yellow, and green flakes swirled around our heads. No camera could capture it.

You might meet me in the Piazzo Navona. I like to get a bit of ice cream and watch the afternoon evolve. The hot summer afternoons are best served with ice cream, and what better place to eat ice cream than Piazzo Navona.
I also like Naples but taking a stroll along the boardwalk. There are melons sold by the piece, you can munch of mussel of beef, of possibly a ear of corn. All of this is available on the boardwalk.
All of these images have been painted in my mind.

Something about gliding along the Venice canals at dusk.
And this post reminded of when I drove down the Chianti Road in Tuscany, I felt like I was driving through a Van Gogh painting.
And... I don't mean to be starstruck, but WOW!.. a 1999 response by Frances Mayes!

Lonely planet - thanks for resurrecting this. I, too, was thrilled to see the post from Frances Mayes!
OK, so my answer would be that I would write about sitting in a cafe on Capri watching people walk by in the Piazza Umberto and soaking up the sunshine and atmosphere. Or it would be about driving along the Amalfi Coast with the mountains on one side and the water on the other. Or maybe both !

I would write a novel about the first "Corpus Christi" miracle in Orvietto. Maybe jumping back and forth from the 1st. to the pagent and procession that takes place each year. It would start at sunrise when no one is in the ancient streets and then describe the "waking of the town" at dawn.

Writing and painting are such different things. If I had artistic skills, I would probably paint a landscape of the dramatic, steep Amalfi Coast.
But if I were writing a short story, I'd make it about the family who run the tiny trattoria at the top of the hill in Positano, next to the bus stop (Il Grottino Azurro, if memory serves).
The Mom runs the place, Dad cooks everything, and the son does most of the serving. It just seems like the setting, the family dynamic, and the contrast between the attitudes/priorities of the locals and those of the tourists would be fertile ground for...something. Plus, it's always fun to write about food & wine!
