Iberia Airlines compensation for delayed luggage
My son just arrived in Madrid from the US, but his luggage didn't arrive with him. I've looked online and can't find the answer. What compensation is he entitled to for delayed luggage?

Delayed? I don't think you get any compensation just because the luggage is a little late, or any if you are going home. What damages would there be if you are at home? It wouldn't ruin a vacation, you wouldn't need to go out and buy stuff, etc.
I don't think you get any compensation for delayed luggage if it doesn't cause you any monetary damages yourself.
If he just arrived, I'd just wait and see if it shows up or if it is lost. If it's lost, that's another story, max is 1200 euro on European carrier, I think, but not sure it applies to US arrivals.
They are required to deliver it to your address when it arrives, though.

oh, sorry, I was reading it backwards. Okay, I did have luggage delays 3 times in Europe, each about one day each. The carrier delivered it to my hotel within one day, I got nothing and didn't expect anything as I had no damages but a little anxiety.
Once on Aer Lingus, I did have plans that evening that required a certain form of dress I did not have in my carryon, so I submitted my claim to them after I got home, and they paid it. It was a reasonable amount though and I had receipts (one pair of dress shoes worth about 25 euro, probably, I had other stuff in my carryon but was attending an event I couldn't wear sneakers). I explained the charge, and they paid it.
I don't think anyone gives you money just as a lump sum without you justifying what the damages were.

For delayed baggage, some airlines offer immediate one-off payments at a set amount to cover emergency purchases (such as toiletries or underwear). Some will pay a set amount per day up to a maximum number of days. Others will not make cash payments at the time, but prefer to reimburse expenditure on essential items on seeing receipts. The general principle is to cover essential, unavoidable expenditure resulting from the delay to delivery of the baggage."

Did he fly direct or change planes and fly out of London?
My luggage never arrived when I flew from the States to Madrid.Iberia code shares w/British Airways-a love/hate relationship.
It took 3 days before I went to Madrid Barajas airport after being told my luggage had arrived but when I went to the terminal and tried to pick it up it wasn't there.On the third day, my Spanish friends kept calling Iberia and giving my name and cell phone number to help locate it.On the third night I got a call just before midnight asking me to come and pick up my luggage! It was transferred to a different terminal! I arrived and was told to go ahead and look for it! When I found it, the pull out handle was broken-it wouldn't retract-a brand new Eddie Bauer suitcase-Iberia wouldn't pay to have it fixed nor replace it.The taxi to/from the airport cost me almost $100. What a nightmare dealing w/Iberia1
Bottom line, fingers crossed your son gets his luggage and forget about compensation......

I'm in South America now, LATAM has been checking all the retractable handles on our checked luggage so this must be a big issue for claims. imo- Iberia will be the hardest airline to receive compensation from, probably the rudest staff of any airline and if you are a good looking blond American? forget it

He changed planes at LAX and is hoping it's there and will make it to Madrid tomorrow.
I should have told him to bring a small "personal" item with the bare essentials. I do myself that because I fear just this.
It sounds like Iberia is right up there with Alitalia in the missing baggage department.
He is not a good looking blond.

Has he filed with the airline on the spot and asked them to track the luggage? What you want them to do it find it and deliver it to him right away. You only get compensation if they lost it permanently. I would suggest he call them every couple of hours to determine the status, make sure they know where he is to deliver it, and that he won;t go away until they fix it (based on Iberia losing the luggage of a companion for 2 days - when it was actually hidden away somewhere in the airport).
