how's the audio guide for the Colosseum?

Instead of taking a tour, I was thinking of paying for the audio guide, which is much cheaper than paying a tour (around 25 Euros).
Any experiences?

I did the Context Rome Ancient Rome tour which encompassed the Forum and Colosseum. I know they seem expensive but they are worth every cent. There was just four of us in the tour and the best part is you can ask lots of questions.

I was very excited going through these places and was very happy that I had someone to share that enthusiasm with.
I understand how finances are so important when traveling but I would forfeit something else in order to get such quality information.

Has anyone actually tried the audio tour? I can appreciate that context tours are very good, and haven't ruled them out but when I have to pay for 5-6 of us, it's more than my entire days budget, or did I get the price wrong? (I'm working on E60 each, but it was quite some time ago that I looked them up)

Hi ItalyLove,

Yes 5 - 6 people really does put it into a new perspective and yes they are about 60 euro. That would be a lot of money wouldn't it?

Regardless then, I'd do the audio but hopefully someone can set us straight as to the quality of the audio tour.

I did the audio tour for the Colosseum, and I thought it was quite good. A large amount of the information was also available on signs, etc posted around the colosseum as well, but I enjoyed the play-by-play of the audio guide. I'd rather listen than read.

I'm not sure if there is an audio tour of the Forum. I never saw evidence of one.

I would have enjoyed having a guide for the forum, since without one you're just sort of wandering around old ruins (of course a print guide book will help some). We were "approached" by several people holding tours of the colosseum/forum, but they all said that the forum was sort of a "freebie" if you did the colosseum tour and I couldn't find anyone who would let us just do a forum tour......

You should definitely go see the Forum at night; that was one of my favorite moments! Wine and cheese and fresh bread, picnic dinner overlooking the forum with the colosseum in the background!!

enjoy your trip
Carrie

There's an inexpensive Forum tour that starts right below Palatine Hill.
You can also get a tour (11am)right outside the colosseum for around 18E (includes entrance fee). They will then invite you to take a free tour of Palitine and Forum.

I did the Colisseum audio tour last year - I actually thought it was very good. I am not usually a big fan of audio tours, but I really thought the Colisseum was well done and it added a lot of "color" to the sites within the Colisseum that you were viewing. I would definitely recommend getting the audio guide...
