How many days in Venice?

Hello. I'm wondering what would be an appropriate time to spend in Venice to get a full appreciation of the city (sightsee, museums, relax)? I currently have planned a stay of 3 nights. Thanks.

Hi fr,

3 nights is the minimum to "get [an] appreciation of the city".

We stayed last year for a week & didn't have time to relax, so I'd say 2 weeks.

I agree with Ira--3 days is minimum and 5 is better.

I stayed for 3 nights in May and while I saw everything I wanted to see, it wasn't as leisurely as I would have liked and I wish I had time to just wander more.

I agree with Bob that 5 is better, especially if you plan to go to Torcello (which I hope you do). But even so, 5 days is superficial and you will find that there are many places you just don't get a chance to see. A "full appreciation" of the city would involve a time span of months -- and I'm not exaggerating. Venezia had very complex history, all of which is now hiding in plain sight, but it takes some time to decode what you are seeing.

Each time I go to Venice I spend more nights there. My first visit backin 1998 was for 3 nights and my last trip in May was 5 nights. Love, love, love Venice! Go for 5 nights.

This is the problem with Italy-you always need more!I have this problem with Venice and Rome. Each time I expand my time there,I keep finding more and more that I WISH I had time for! What a wonderful problem.

Your other thread indicates you're spending 4 days in Venice. If in fact you're staying 4 full days and 3 nights, you can see quite a bit. A week would certainly be optimal, but if you're trying to stay within the total number of days for your trip, I'd be tempted to take a day off either Strasbourg or the Riviera and add it to Venice - there is so much to see and it's such a wonderful and unique city.

We spent three nights but just had under 2 1/2 days. My husband feels like he's "seen it" and doesn't need to go back. I could have used another day. I will, say, however, that we did not go into ANY musuems. We were traveling with three kids and went to the Galleria Borghese in Rome, the Academia and Uffizi in Florence, and wanted the Venice time to be more relaxed and unstructured (although we did tour the major churches and the Doges Palace.) If we had wanted to tour the museums, 3 nights would not have been enough.

I've been in Venice a total of 14 days over 2 trips. I still haven't seen Murano, Torcello, the Accademia or ridden on a gondola. Too much other stuff to do and see.

It's the perfect city for wandering aimlessly...

My wife and I have been to venice three times and each time we spent a minimum of 4 nights. We never tire of Venice. There is always something new to see as you let yourself get lost walking the city. We ar eplaning to go back again in November.

i think 4 days is a good amount to get a general feel for Venice. You can always come back once you realize how wonderful it is.

my dilemma is this:

I'm spending more days in Italy than in France, just because I'm fascinated, obsessed is a more accurate word, with Italian culture and history. Currently, I have two weeks planned for Rome, two weeks in Florence, and four days in Venice. Inter-city travel is not included in these time frames; they are the number of full days I will spend seeing the cities. I feel like I'm neglecting Venice somehow by only spending four full days there. I have the impression that Florence and Rome will have more to see and do than Venice, and also that lodging in Venice will be twice or more as expensive than hostels in Rome or Florence (since there are no hostels in Venice). Am I wrong in this appreciation? Is there a "better" time distribution between these three italian cities?

FYI, Rome is 10 times the size of Florence (4 million people vs. 400,000).

I suggest you move 3 days from Florence to Venice.

A week in Venice and 10 days in Florence and 2 weeks in Rome seems like a good (though not the ONLY!) balance to me.

It's great that you have 4-1/2 weeks to work with! You'll be glad you did.

I think bardo's come up with a good plan.It sounds like a wonderful trip.Whatever you do,don't steal any days from the Rome portion of the trip!If you're as interested in history and culture as you say, you'll be in heaven!

In your shoes, I would re-distribute the Florence and Venice time closer to equal.
