how long does it take from Colosseum to Vatican by Metro?

I need to see if I can make it from a tour I'm taking in the Coloseseum (from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm) and then going to the Vatican since I have the SCAVI tour at 3:00. Do you think I can make it? If not, I need to cancel my Colosseum tour

I think you can make it easily. It should take no more than 1/2 an hour by metro and they depart pretty often. Actually, I don't even think it will take that long, but then you will have to walk a little to the Vatican, but I still think you'll have plenty of time.

You will probably have enough time but taking the Metro isn't the most convenient way to get to the Scavi office as you will have at least a 15 to 20 minute walk there from the Metro stop. A better way would be to take any bus going up Via Fori Impreriali (buses stop in front of the Colosseo metro stop is on this street) that is going to Largo Argentina. I believe there are a couple express buses too. At Largo Argentina, get off and get on a bus going to the Vatican, the number 64 is one and again, there may be an express bus. The bus will leave you in front of the Piazza San Pietro where it is an easy walk to the Scavi office.

There is no problem in the middle of the day getting from the Colliseum to the Vatican in a reasonable time. You have an hour and a half. If you don't get lost, you'll be able to eat lunch too.

As Grinisa said, the metro is not convenient to the Scavi tour, so a bus would be better. If you're really concerned, I'm sure there's a taxi stand near the Colosseum. If all else fails, you could probably walk it in 45 minutes.

You'll have no problem at all on this...none. Get on at Colosseo going toward Rebibbia, change lines at Termini to the line going toward Battistini, get off at Ottaviano or Cipro. The Scavi entrance is to the left of the Basilica past the Swiss Guard house.

If you get off at Cipro just follow the signs to the Vatican which will put you close to the entrance for the Vatican Museums. If you get off at Ottaviano, just walk down the street through the arch in the wall and through the square. I'd say they're about even in terms of distance but Ottaviano may be a bit closer.

Here's a map of the metro system.

There is a bus that goes to the directly there from the Colosseum. It's the 571 bus.

I'm 90% sure this is where the bus stop is, if not the metro's 150m away.
Go to http://daphne.palomar.edu/mhudelson/...Roman/5152.jpg
and to narrow it down, think of the Colosseum as a clock.

10:00 Is the Arch of Constantine
11:00 Is the Via Sacra walkway (it looks like a street) leading to the Arch of Titus.
12:00 Temple of Venus and Rome
1:00 The Via dei Fori Imperiali
2:00 That triangle with trees is the roof of the Colosseum Metro Station.
4:00 there is a Yellow Bus (the one facing up & down, NOT the one facing left & right at 5:00).

The bus stop should be right where that 4:00 yellow bus is. From there it goes up past the metro station and up the Via d. Fori Imperiali. Find the bus stop sign that says 571 and wait.

This bus crosses the Tiber River at the bridge called 'Ponte Pr. Amedeo Savoia Aosta' your stop is in 400-500m after the bridge.

I *Think* you might go thru a tunnel and it would be after that but it's also possible that the bus stop is in a large underground garage.

Either way after 500m from the bridge you are right alongside Vatican City, the bus stop is in Largo/Piazza Porta Cavalleggeri.
Also my last guide didn't make this point very well but my guide before that did. So most people on my last tour missed it.
When you get to the 'Grafitti Wall' which is the last stop on the tour before going upstairs.
You will see this
http://www.stpetersbasilica.org/Conf...omb/Wall_G.jpg This picture is 31yrs old but today in that hole in the wall you will see a small plexiglass box sticking out.
That box contains some of the bones found in this tomb.

I'm an Atheist (so unbiased ) but from everything I've read and thinking the facts through, I truely believe that this is the Tomb of St. Peter. And it's very likely that many/most of the bones found are from him.
Regards, Walter

Also on the pavement outside the Scavi Office where you pick-up your tickets you will see a marble square in the pavement. It will say 'Sito dello Oblisco Vaticano' that is where the oblisk which is now in the Piazza in front of St. Peter's once stood when it was on the spina in the 'Circus of Nero/Caligula'. You will see the oblisk's location in the diagrams in the websites above.

One more question: how in ADVANCE do I have to be in the Scavi office BEFORE my appointment time for the Scavi tour?
Thanks again

ItalyLove, in my case I have taken this bus a few times for short hops but not from that location all the way to Vatican City.
I used my Rome Metro/Bus map for the route and the ATAC website to pinpoint the bus stop.

IME the 'Swiss Guards' won't allow you thru the gate until 10mins before the tour.
Regards, Walter

10 minutes sounds about right. Last time we dit the tour (2005) we were there about 20 early and just sauntered on through which produced one of our favorite little phrases. One of the Swiss Guards came over and asked, with consternation: 'what is this.' My wife and I throw that one out to each other every now and then.

Get to the coloseum early .. 9am I think it opens arrive at 830 - 9 and you will beat the crowds.

The trip from there to the vat is probably best done in a taxi tbh. There is a taxi rank right outside the Coloseum and as long as you keep your wits about you it isnt to pricey. Busses come when they please and the waiting around for me is just a pain.

So, How long do I have to be in the Scavi office BEFORE the tour?
I'm worried about checking in my bag, and then not been able to get in the tour. Sometimes they're just weird.....

You check in and leave your bag at the same spot where you pick up your ticket. If you can get there 10 to 20 minutes before your appointment I'd say you're fine. To be safe, go to the website where you requested the Scavi tickets and send them an email.
