How do you buy tickets for Premier League soccer matches?

Sending my son over the pond with his grandfather end of september/beginning of October to attend three games for his 16th B'day. I have the schedule, and he's picked his games . . . what's the best, most efficient way to buy the tickets? any direction appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Whatever you do, try to avoid the "event" booking things on the web.

Since your son has his matches picked out, I'm assuming he's familiar with the clubs, and knows that they have "official" websites.

The club sells tickets directly from their website to the general public, so you're best bet would be to start there--find out when they go on general sale, and buy then.
If he's not picky which side to sit with, he can also try the away team, but word of caution about the cheering for the opposition.

Should the direct approach fail, there are also US based fan-clubs (like ArsenalAmerica) which are alloted a number of these tickets each year as well.

Hope him & his grandfather have a good trip and get to watch some EPL.

Which games are they? Many prime games are sold out far, far ahead.

On the info so far it's impossible to answer. Some teams are next to impossible to get tickets for (Spurs, The Arse, Chelsea, Man U, Liverpool etc), others much easier, and even that changes with each match, as some are more desirable than others, eg derby games (as opposed to Derby games, which are dead easy).

What games do they want to watch?

Thanks for everyone who asked about what matches we are trying to get tickets for. They are below. Additional suggestions welcome.

Saturday, September 30

First Choice - Chelsea vs. Aston Villa
Second Choice - Charlton vs. Arsenal

Sunday, October 1

First Choice - Manchester United vs. Newcastle
Second Choice - Tottenham vs Portsmouth
Third Choice - West Ham vs. Reading

Monday, October 2

Only Choice - Watford vs. Fulham

You may have problems with your Saturday choices - Charlton normally isn't too difficult to get a ticket for but I'm sure the visit of Arsenal will be a sell out. You may get lucky with Tottenham v Portsmouth but you'd certainly be OK with West Ham v Reading and Watford v Fulham on the Monday would be fine too.

Don't forget you can always look outside the Premier(not)ship(not) and try a club like Crystal Palace or (if you must) Millwall if you want a game on Saturday

Ok here's the info:

Saturday, September 30

First Choice - Chelsea vs. Aston Villa

Not a chance. Will be sold out tight as a drum. You can buy tickets from brokers or from flat nosed men in the Fulham Broadway - but they will cost hundreds, especially for two together.

Second Choice - Charlton vs. Arsenal

This is much more possible. However for this match I would expect Charlton to sell out, but all is not lost, I would think that all club members would probably get a ticket. Details of how to become a member are on the CAFC website.

Sunday, October 1

First Choice - Manchester United vs. Newcastle

Firstly how are you planning to get to Manchester from London on Saturday evening? It's quite a long way. However if you do, it will probably all be in vain. Man Utd sell out all their games and this is quite an attractive fixture.

I really wouldn't make the journey unless you have sourced tickets in advance, as they are fiendishly hard to get up in Manchester.

Second Choice - Tottenham vs Portsmouth

There's again no chance of getting a ticket on the open market. If this is a TV game there's a remote possibility that members might get a ticket - again you would have to join, which is expensive , with no guarantee of a seat.

Third Choice - West Ham vs. Reading

This is probably your best bet. The Hammers are well supported but Reading are not a big draw. You may even be able to get tickets for this online without joining. It also depends on how the famously unreliable WHUFC are getting on - if they are having their regular relegation battle there's more chance, if they are having their equally regular challenge for Europe, then that will affect demand

Monday, October 2

Only Choice - Watford vs. Fulham

Should be fairly easy - Watford is easy to get to from London.

Have you thought about some of the Championship clubs? Crystal Palace in particular are pretty much a premiership club in exile, and it's not too difficult to get tickets for their games.

Also the reason that some of those games are on Sundays is that the clubs concerned are playing in the UEFA cup on the proceeding Thursday - and these games aren't covered by season tickets - so more tickets are available to the public. The fixtures aren't known yet - but keep an eye on the british sporting press (online) after the 28th Sept when all will be clear.

And I should point out that the average English football fan will not be held responsible for their actions if you call it "soccer" within earshot!

or (if you must) Millwall if you want a game on Saturday>>>>>>

Sorry to disagree but you simply CAN'T go to Millwall.

Because of their hooligan supporters they have the tightest membership scheme there is. If you aren't already registered (which is a rigmarole in itself, and I can't see how you could do it from abroad) you cannot now join for this season.

You're not missing much.

Should we start teaching devanson some chants? Maybe a quick chorus of Stand up if you hate Manyoo...

Oh and no one will have a clue what you're talking about if you talk about the EPL - it's the Premier(not)ship(not)

Audere - haven't you seen those posters in West London urging people to see Real Passion Real Football and Real Talent by going to Millwall - "only 7 minutes from London Bridge" I still snigger at the thought of Sloane Square society mingling in the New Den

Thanks to everyone who has offered advice . . . summarizing you are suggesting that I:

- Remove the term "soccer" from my lexicon and replace with football - done
- register as a member of the clubs where I want to buy tix
- Forget about Man U or pay up (will probably do the latter)
- Think about attending championship matches.

Any other input?

I live in West London and I go to the Den. Mind you I wouldn't necessarily refer to what goes on there as "mingling".

I t seems I am somewhat out of date.....

You don't have to join Millwall's membership to get tickets, although you can bet your bottom dollar that if they get Cardiff or West Ham in the cups then membership will be required.

I still wouldn't go though. It's next to a rubbish incinerator* - it's that sort of a place.

*ie an incinerator of rubbish, not a not very good incinerator.

"joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth ..."

This could get pricey - seriously, check the cost of this agianst buying tickets from the agencies. Being a member is no guarentee of seats (at Spurs it gives you around a ten to one chance)

As I said, one other possibility is the European games - Chelsea don't always sell out their euro games, and it's worth thinking about for Spurs and West Ham.

Sounds like an agency might be the way to go . . . I'm the perfect mark for them because I don't really care what it costs as this is a once in a lifetime gift to my son. How can I find an agency that could get this done?

I never had a problem getting ManU tickets from ticket brokers. I see about 3-4 matches a year, including at least 1 CL match and there are enough tickets available from these guys right in front of the Old Trafford on the match day to satisfy anybodies needs.....

Please advise me, anyone out there that can help?? Thanks a lot.

This is an old thread to tag onto, however, see the Liverpool FC website on:

http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/tickets/la...-15-00-00/info

You won't be able to buy online until they go on general sale, so keep an eye on their site.

Advice would remain the same - write directly to the club and ask them. Sometimes clubs will make allowances for oversaea visitors - the worst they can do is say no.
