How do I text European number with American phone in Europe ?

I know from the US I have to dial 011 first for the International portion.

However, while in Europe, do I still need that ? Or is it just 1 ? I know you frequently see the +1 for phone numbers, but what does that translate to ?

We will be in Norway and Sweden and I need to text people there from my US phone (no, I'm not getting a different SIM card).

thanks

You use either 00 or the + sign to indicate that it is a foreign number. For example, to call a number in Stockholm, you would dial +46 8 xxx xx xx, where 46 is the country code and 8 is the area code. For example, the number for Ahlens City in Stockholm is +46 8 676 60 000.

For Norway the country code is 47, and the phone numbers are 8 digits, so you would dial +47 xxxx xxxx.

To get the plus sign, it will either be one of the two keys on either side of the 0, or you can hold down the zero on many phones, and the + will come up.

Remember that if you are using your "US phone" in Europe it will be connected to a European cell network

thanks guys -

Dukey, that answers one things that was confusing me - the European network treats my phone as a European one.

tg, thanks... so I'm inputting these into my contacts list - I should just input it as "00 47 xxxx xxxx" right ? (I know you basically said this, I just want to confirm)

I have to text someone when we are en route so they can meet us, so I don't want to screw up.

just be WARNED. I have received TEXTS HOURS later than when they were sent. Not sure why.. but it has usually happened when someone had a foreign phone.

Spend the money and call to be SURE they received the message if you see they don't text back .

<i>I should just input it as "00 47 xxxx xxxx" right ?</i>

That should work.

linca, good idea -- I'll ask them to confirm they received it and if I don't get a reply within 5-10 minutes, I'll call.

tg, thanks!
