Hotel rooms in Italy

Hotel rooms in Italy
We're planning a trip to Italy in November and plan to stay in hotels in the price range of $80-$100, most of which are listed on fodors. Is it safe to leave our luggage in the hotel rooms? We will carry a money belt with our passport etc and a small daypack with guide books and such when we step out. Your suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks.

Your luggage should be safe in the rooms. I've never had a problem with that and we've stayed a couple of times in hotels in that price range. We did have cash stolen when we stayed in a B&B in Rome once, but if you carry it with you, you'll be fine.

Use common sense when it comes to safety. Carry your money and passport with you at all times. Some hotel rooms have safety box where you can store your "important" valuables. Now, let me ask you this, if it's not safe, are you planning to drag your luggage while sightseeing.....probably not!

I can't imagine what you would do if you do not leave your luggage in your hotel room!
Even in this price range there may be a small room safe or a safe available at the front desk for paperwork you don't wish to carry every day.
Also you can use a small suitcase lock and keep things in the locked suitcase in the room. This obviously would not prevent theft of the entire thing, but would stop someone from taking small items.
I don't travel with valuables like cell phone, digital camera, or videocam, which are often the things mentioned IF a hotel theft has occured.
Having said all that, I have never encountered theft from any hotel staff anywhere I've traveled yet.

Concur with the above. I lived in Europe for 12 years and spent a good deal of that time traveling. My only loss at a hotel involved a time in London at a hotel on a crowded street where someone was able to climb up the railings/drainpipes on the outside of the hotel to my room on the second floor. I think that I left the door to the balcony open. Dumb me. You should be fine.
