Hotel Raspail Montparnasse: Anyone stayed there?

We are looking into booking hotels for our first trip to Paris. Have any of you been to or stayed at this hotel? What are your thoughts on the area (hotel is located at the intersection of Raspail Blvd. & Montparnasse Blvd.). Appreciate the help.

Dimitri hello! Had a look at that hotel some weeks ago. The entrance (Art déco) is fabulous. I am not sure about the rooms though. Anyway, it must be a little noisy because the rooms are either on Blvd. Raspail or on Blvd. Montparnasse, both very busy streets. <BR>I prefer Hotel "Le Royal"***, 212, Blvd. Raspail which is very close (métro Vavin). Mostly renovated. Some 50 rooms. Could see one room to the back and would definitely consider it. <BR>Tel. +01 43 20 69 20, Fax +01 42 79 95 23 (not sure what country code you need to dial from the US, sorry). <BR>I always stay in that area which I do love. Montparnasse is lively, very Parisian and safe. You can walk to the Luxembourg Gardens and stroll around smallish nice streets like Rue Vavin, Rue Bréa, Rue Notre-Dame-des-Champs with nice little typical shops. You will find a lot of good typical restaurants like "Le Caméléon", "Le Bistrôt du Dôme", Brasserie Fernand" and the very famous brasserie "La Coupole". Very easy to get around by bus or métro. <BR>Hope this helps!

Dimitri: <BR>I stayed there about two years ago and loved it. Rooms were very nicely decorated and the one I stayed in was quite large. Staff were friendly and, like Ursela, I love the 14th. Another recommendation would be L'Aiglon in the same area. You can find them both on this web-site. <BR> <BR>Regards ... Ger <BR>http://www.france-hotel-guide.com/75...ntparnasse.htm <BR> <BR> <BR>

My brother stayed there last year and loved it. Very nice, and he said they brought his breakfast to his room (he didn't pre-arrange it either!)

I haven't stayed in that hotel, but I prefer to stay in that area of Paris myself, when I visit. I did read a comment somewhere that it was noisy or something (I think in Fodors Rants and Raves, they are in there), but it does have a nice art deco exterior. I would expect it to be noisy at that corner, in summer when I might want windows open, I probably would be leery of that (unless you can close windows and it has AC). In any case, it is a very convenient location being near a bus stop and several metro lines, as well as within walking distance of a train stationj; there are tons of cafes, restaurants, movie theaters around also. I like it for convenient and familiarity, but many tourists do not like to stay more than a few blocks from the Seine, so it's hard to tell if you will be like that (witness above anonymous comment about how it was too far away from things). I recommended my favorite hotel in that area to a friend of a friend (and I usually don't mention it) and she wanted to stay in a much smaller, crummier hotel with no charm and on a worse street simply (which her travel agent scared up) because it was in an area labeled "St-Germain" and perhaps 1/4 mile closer to the Seine. I told her to go ahead but don't say I didn't warn you if your room is no larger than the bed and has ugly furniture; geez, Raspail and Montparnasse intersection is only a few metro stops from the Seine. I stayed in that area last month and the Royal hotel looks like it's still undergoing renovation, don't know how extensive although people were staying there. Just don't mix up Raspail Montparnasse with the Mercure Raspail right next doot; I have never stayed in one of their hotels (this is not a modern one, they took one over), but they are really obnoxious the way they put up those ugly purple signs on them, it ruins the appearance of the street.

Mercure Raspail
126 Rue du Cherche Midi
75006 PARIS
FRANCE

This has a rate of 85 Euros per night for my dates. It looks good. It says it has air conditioning in the rooms. Has anyone learned anything new about it since?

It's small - with only 25 rooms.

Oops - I just did what Christina said not to do and mixed these two hotels up. My apologies.
