hotel alpha..fairly near the train station--just ask at the tourist info desk at the station and they will point you in the right direction. Its on a quiet street, very clean and includes breakfast.

I haven't gone on my trip yet but we have reserved at Pickwick Hotel, which is on the river, next door to Hotel des Alpes. The rate for a twin is about $85 (but the twin room is most likely the picture of the end-to-end arrangement). The concern here is the Mr. Pickwick bar downstairs (noise) but we're going to be brave - I believe the bar closes by midnight.
I emailed with a person who stayed there a few years ago, and she confirmed her twin room was the photo on the web, and said she didn't remember noise once they went to bed. Also said the room wasn't fancy (obvious!) but was clean.
http://www.hotelpickwick.ch/index.html

Another hotel that is mentioned here frequently for being nice but reasonably priced is the Goldener Stern:
http://www.goldener-stern.ch/hotel_e.htm

We are staying at Hotel Zum Weissen Kreuz in June. Haven't been there before, but it has had favorable reviews on this board and elsewhere. Rate is about 108 USD per night. Website is www.hotel-wkreuz.ch.

Good Luck!
Liz

If you stay near the trainstation (bahnhof) make sure the windows have been soundproofed. Otherwise, you will hear the trains coupling and uncoupling all night long.

I have stayed at the Goldener Stern. Will stay there again. Great location about a block from the river and a few minute walk to the train station or anywhere in town. Good buffet breakfast also. Friendly family owned and operated.

Larry J
For a most special experience, try the Hotel Loewengraben. A former jailhouse tunred into a hip B&B. Perfect location. Unfortunately, they don't mention the prices on their site, but it should be in your price range.
www.loewengraben.ch
