Hotel location in Rome

Hi!
We're planning to go to Rome in August. We tentatively booked a hotel located on the corner of Via Princepe Amedeo and Via National. It's about 300 meters from the station. I was told that hotels close to the train station is not an ideal place to stay. Does anyone know this location? Is this still considered the Centre?

we have stayed in this area twice in the last two years and have found it quite convenient. It is a bit run-down immediately around the station but it seems safe enough. It is within walking distance of the major sites, if you don't mind some walking. Walking is the best way to get around central Rome. Ask for a quiet (tranquile)room, away from the street, as the trams can be a bit noisy. We haven't been to Rome in August, but I believe it can be quite hot. Airconditioning is not always a standard feature! Via Nationale is a good street for shopping.

I'm sure you will have a good holiday there.

regards Rob & Lynne

I've stayed at hotels in this area too and found it completely acceptable. Via Nazionale is a major street filled with stores and restaurants. It's close to Termini but not right next to it, which makes it really convenient if you decide to take the metro or are taking the train in or out of Rome. If you plan on walking it is about a 15 minute walk to the sights.
As others have told you, it's possible to stay in the Termini area. But I have to add, it's just not the nicest area in Rome. If you can get a hotel near the Pantheon, or Piazza Navona, or the Spanish Steps, or the Trevi Fountain, or . . . other places in the center, you will be in a prettier, friendlier neighborhood with nicer restaurants and shops and closer to some of the sights you will want to see anyway.

Make sure your hotel has air conditioning and that it stays on all night (as opposed to being turned off at midnight). Agree with above posters, termini area is not impossible, but other areas have more charm. Try the TimeOut website for cheap hotels in Rome--they have good recommendations.

Here's a another vote for the "Termini area is not as bad as you've heard" point of view! While admittedly not a picturesque as other areas mentioned, it is perfectly safe. It's also convenient to two Metro stations and several bus lines, as well as restaurants and other services.

We have reservations for Villa Florence, located near the Spanish Steps, I believe. I enjoy searching websites for good prices as well as comfort. They have a 30% discount for the time we will be in Rome....a nice savings. The clincher for me was the jacuzzi in the room. After two days of walking, I'll be looking forward to relief.

My only hope is that I have made a wise choice. Is anyone familiar with Villa Florence?

We just returned from Rome and we stayed at a hotel located on Via Princepe Amedeo (Amedeus hotel. We found that this hotel was exceptional, but the neighborhood, while near the staion is a bit run down. Make sure the hotel has air, it is already hot in June.

I vote for a hotel around the Spainish Steps. The Via Condotti is close by with many shops and restaurants. I don't know if it's really much safer than the area around Termini, but it sure does feel safer.
As far as convenience is concerned, Rome is a vast city with attractions spread out everywhere. Especially in August, you'll find yourself using public transportation because walking is not an option.
