Cheap hotels and hostels are listed in the Greece Rough Guide, Lonely Planet, Let's Go, Frommer's and Fodor's guide books.
I would suggest you invest in one. Also, once you know where along your route you will be stopping, try asking some questons in the appropriate tripadvisor.com forums.

"Cheap" can mean anything. On mainland on August, outside large cities, you may be able to find some rooms to let or small family owned hotels/guesthouse, charging anything about 25-35 euro for single occupancy in an ensuite room, sometimes even inclusing breakfast. This is of course for inland areas, this is low season for mountain resorts etc. If you head for a sea-side location os islands, August is high season and rates will vary accordingly. Hostels are not very usual outside cities, but you may be able to find campings in some locations. Sometimes they have some wooden "huts" or other facilities that veify as a room if you do not wish to a tent or something.
www.hostelworld.com lists hostels but sometimes small hotels too in Greece. www.booking.com is a large thing in Greece and include accomondation options for any kind og budget. Note though that often rooms to let are not listed anywhere on the net, you can find out on the spot, just asking around.

I've always been lucky asking in tavernas or around the quay side when the ferries come in. Quality and price vary, but that's the fun of trekking around Greece. Its a relaxed place, and they are a hospitable people.

A good site to use is http://www.eurocheapo.com/
It will tell you whether booking.com, venere, com, laterooms etc are the cheapest for any particular accommodation.
You can change the currency showing & put the list in order of price too.
