Hiking in Switzerland first week of October
We land in Zurich from the US October 1 and would like to spend 2 days in Zurich before going someplace to hike for a few days. I'm trying to get an idea of where might be a good place to base ourselves where weather would likely be nice. On Another post Ingo answered the Engadine valley usually has "perfect weather" for hiking in October. Are there other areas that might be expected to have decent weather? We are moderate hikers. Afterwards we want to train it to Italy. Thanks for your advice.

I'm sure no one can guarantee the what the weather will be like anywhere at any specific time, but I sure would love to see the Engadine (and the Val Bregalgia and the Val Mustair) as the leaves change!
It might help if you say how long you will spend in the area...

I suspect somebody who has been to the Engadine (me) might suggest you also consider the Bernese Oberland (also me). Weather "guarantees" I am always skeptical about but I would check www.wunderground.com

Nobody can guarantee good weather. The Engadine is usually fortunate enough to be right in the middle of the Alps (slightly on the southern side), so the tall mountains around it often keep the clouds away. I have been there a couple of times when the Bernese Oberland or Lucerne region were hit by a rain/snow front and the weather in the Engadine was still decent. Of course the Bernese Oberland also has wonderful weather often in fall.
Why don't you decide on the last minute? Even after landing in Zürich? October is not high season, you'll always find decent accommodation on the last minute.
If going to the Engadine, do go to Soglio/Bregaglia and Poschiavo valley, too.

Thanks, all! Yes, I realize there are no weather guarantees anywhere. I was just looking for some people who know the area and what generally weather is like for hiking. I have, of course, already looked at a few weather sites, trying to compare. Ingo, your explanation of the reason for good weather is helpful. Thank you

As I said in my OP we would spend a few days wherever we go. This would be the first week in October timeframe. If the weather turned out to be so good we would consider staying longer. We will be away a total of five weeks so we are flexible.
Good to hear we would have no trouble finding places to stay.
