Help with ferry schedule Naples to Sorrento please.
Calling all Amalfi coast experts. I am down to the nitty gritty details of planning 26 day trip for my family of 9/10 people. We have to get from Naples to Sorrento to be picked up by a driver who will transport us to villa we have rented further down the coast. I thought the hydrofoil would be fun as we will have more than our share of train rides. The website I have is in Italian. Does anyone know if it is necessary to book this in advance or can we just do it when we get to Naples?
How often does it run?
I should say we arrive from California the day before and spend one night in Naples, so we won't be traveling in a state of exhaustion.
Thank you, I know I have more questions to come but thought I'd start at beginning of trip and ask as I finish details.

I don't know the schedule - but I would be hesitant to take 9 or 10 people plus all their luggage on a hydrofoil - which you may well need advance tickets for. Have you considered getting the bus/van (for 10 people with luggage you will need a very large vehicle) straight to the villa and save sightseeing for when you're not hauling luggage around.
(We took the hydrofoil only from Sorrento to Capri - and our hotel organized tickets for us - and it was almost full - in late May. In midsummer I would assume it is always full.)

What time does your flight arrive? I would take the Curreri shuttle bus from the airport to Sorrento on arrival (10€).

We arrive around noon. But my brother in laws family came from Naples so we are committed to one night of follow the ancestor trail. I can get car/driver to pick us up in Naples just thought more adventure to take boat. It may be good advice however to skip it with luggage.
Thanks, Kim

Whilst not particularly expert re the AC, we've lived on nearby Ischia for a decade - and have been using the local hydrofoils since 2001 !
There are two operators on the route, with the Alilauro line providing almost all the daytime crossings - for details, try having a look through...
http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTop..._Campania.html
(As yet, their site is only showing info until June 14, after which the high-season schedules will kick in - although previously they've brought only minor alterations to the departure times!)
It can be a lovely way to cross the Bay.... even in December:

But with tickets, on the day, at €12.30 for adults and €8.95 for under12s - plus €2 per suitcase - fairly pricey!
May be different this year, but people often report having no joy with their online booking system. Fortunately, those hydrofoils carry 300+ passengers, and I've never read of that route selling out... with the cheap (€4.10) rail alternative, it's by no means as busy as those that cart daytrippers to Capri!
But if concerned, perhaps best to pop down to Beverello either on your first day, or early that morning, and buy them... or rearrange that transfer if, for any reason, you can't?

Thank you Peter, great info! While pricey it seems like fun. We will make up difference in only having driver from Sorrento . Maybe our hotel can help us get tickets? I did try website and never did find English. Parlo un po'Italiano!

Where is the villa? There might be better transport options if you state your actual destination. I don't imagine you will be able to book one driver for 9-10 people plus luggage.
What is your destination after the coast? It might make more sense to transfer on arrival to Sorrento by the Curreri bus and stay in Naples after the villa stay.

The villa is near the hamlet of Torca, 1km from Sant'Agata Dui Golfi. I am open to other transportation suggestions. We go to Rome the day we leave the Villa, we are booked there without change.
Yes, it requires 2 vans to get all of us and luggage

There are buses from Sorrento, though probably little fun with luggage - and your accommodation might not be very near a stop?
As you've not said when you'll be here, be sure note the periods this covers, with a high-summer version due eventually:

For some help with the various codes etc used on that, try:

I have tried to find ferry times for the Metro Del Mare from Naples to Sorrento but as I read the time table I have accessed it only runs early in the morning or in the late afternoon. Anyone have any other information,
We arrive in Naples, plan to see the museum and Capedemonte then travel to Sorrento early evening to our hotel by ferry, avoiding the rush hour train!
Thank you

Is the Metro del Mare still running? It didn't run late anyway. About 7:00 is the latest most run, and that is generally returning to Naples.
The Alilauro's last run from Naples to Sorrento is at 5:15.
I would suggest having dinner in Naples, then taking the train, but restaurants open later, so don't know if that would work for you.
So, it is leave Naples by 5:15, or take the train.

The Metro del Mare hasn't run since 2012...however...it is scheduled to re-start this year on a limited run from June to August.
I would just rely on the operators - Caremar, Alilauro etc. who do this route regularly.
Information is here. Summer schedules won't be uploaded yet

What are you doing with your luggage while you do the sightseeing?

Luggage will be a problem. If you store it at the train station, you will have to return there to retrieve it and then head to the port. If I were already in the train station (are you arriving Naples by train?), I would just catch the Circumvesuviana (the train runs until about midnight) and forget about the hassle of getting to the port with luggage.
There used to be some kind of luggage storage at the port, but I don't know if that is still the case and I would think the hours would be much more limited than the train station luggage facility. Ferries don't run late (6-7pm would be the latest).
