Help us name our Italian "villa"

We absolutely love EVERYTHING about Italy and have been several times. In the very, very near future, we will be building our dream home and it will have a very Italian/Tuscan look to it inside and out. We want to give our home a name that we use when referring to it as (even in the building stage). However, we are stumped. I thought some of you Fodorites could come up with some suggestions for us.

Here's a little bit about us and the house: The house will sit on a very serene lake -- the view is spectacular. We love sunrises, sunsets, the moon, stars -- all things in the sky! We already live on this lake and consider our present home a retreat and safe haven from a very busy business/work life. Our new home will be that and much more.

Some of the Italian words we've bantered around are Lago, Luna and Bellevedere (sp?). We don't know if the house should be a "casa" or a "villa" ??

We are open to any suggestions. My husband even thought there may be some travelers out there who have come across uniquely named places in Italy that could give us some ideas.

Sorry, there is no prize money involved if you come up with the "winning" house name ... just our undying gratitude!!!

It sounds serene. How about Serenissima? Italian for "most serene."

Hi OT,
Have you considered googling "Italian Villa" and seeing what the Italians name theirs?

Googling "Medici Villa" gives the names of some famous ones.

Have a good time.

I wondered about the same thing. Someone who visited me said the property reminded me of Tuscany. I wouldn't know - have been....YET! I would love to name this humble little place something with stars or cedars or cardinals in the name.

Congrats on your dream home! Life is grand when dream DO come true.

Reminds me of William Boyd's novel, "Any Human Heart" where one of the character's names an Italian villa "La Fucina" (meaning fort) but pronounced it "La F***ina"!

My place in the mountains was "named" but I had a hard time getting a translation. The best I could come up with was "Lucky House". A Fodorite translated and it was instead, House to Get Lucky"! Knowing the little bit I do about the previous owner, I am not too surprised.

What about CASSA DIVINA?

You will be creating a home in a beautiful natural setting as if "emanating from God", which is one definition for divine.

You will be inspired by sunrises and sunsets, by the moon and the stars as if having the honor of a "providential visitation" every day; another definition for divine.

I would name it Cassa Divina as it should be build to offer God the setting for an "inspired performance".

Wish you all the best to you and all your future plans!

Casa ai Cedri: House at the cedars

Casa della Stella Filante: House of the falling star
Stella ploare - north star; stella della sera, evening starstella del mattino, morning star

La Casa Stellata means literally star spangled house, which might be a nice little acknowledgement if you're American.

La Casa dei Sogni - House of dreams

La Casa Serena - the serene house
La Casa Tranquilla - the quiet house

La Casa alla Luna Piena - Full Moon House (or Mezza Luna for half moon, Luna Nuova for new moon, Luna Crescente or Luna Falcata for crescent moon, Luna Calante waning moon.

La Casa al Sole Sorgente - House of the Rising Sun

I mistyped one - north star is stella polare, not ploare.
