Help reg Grossglockner road

Need tips for driving on Grossglockner road. Is a Merc 200 Automatic ok. Or necessary to have manual, I'm comfortable with automatic but lot of people warn about brake failure on downhill??
Is weather ok in Sept for driving?
And planning to do Salzburg to Berchstengaden to Grossglockner to krimml falls to Innsbruck in a day. Possible or better to stay at Zell Am See??

The car is fine.

It would be a long day, better break it up in Zell am See.

Hi,

Salzburg to Berchtesgaden, drive the Grossglockner, on to Krimml Falls and then to Innsbruck is a very big undertaking. Salzburg to Berchtesgaden is about 30 minutes. Berchtesgaden to the start of the Grossglockner is about 2 hours. Driving the Grossglockner will vary depending on how much you'd like to stop. Figure 2 to 3 hours. From here to Innsbruck with Krimml Falls, figure another 2 to 3 hours. I would say base in Zell am See for a night. This also gives you two chances, depending on weather, to drive the Grossglockner, if it's a priority. Zell am See is simply gorgeous.

We stayed at the Pension Alpenrose in Zell am See. Great place, great location.

The car is fine. We've driven over it several times, once in an Opel Zafira (ugh), once in a Volvo wagon and twice in a Renault Laguna. No problems with any of them.
