Please could someone help?

We are looking for a good quality small country house B&B in Provence for the first week in August this year. I know very little about this area but have spent the last 10'years and about a trip every year to Tuscany. We just would like a change but have very little time to research before the flights disappear.

We are looking for a stone type house, close to a town with a budget of around e1000 for the room for the week.

Any clues anybody?

Lots of good suggestions for b&bs. We just returned on Sunday from a week at Mas de Carrassins (http://www.masdescarassins.com/anglais.php). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and thought St. Remy was an excellent base to explore much of Provence. I think it would fit your requirement, though may be a bit more expensive in Aug. - we were there in mid-March which is considered off season. But take a look.

Try the Gites de France web site - gites are exactly what you are looking for sans breakfast - self-catering or ask about Chambres d'Hotes - B&Bs that may or may not IME come with breakfast - well that is just search info.

Try La Fontaine au Loup in Haute Provence near Vaison la Romaine. Sounds like exactly what you're looking for -- stone house, lovely pool, breakfast if you want it, charming hostess.

Which areas are what I would class as classic Provençal , with lavender fields, hills and stone buildings?
I have dug around and the landscapes look a real mix. Which small towns are the ones to head to, for day trips etc?

We have stayed at Mas Pomona B&B several times, returning this summer. It is a beautiful old mas that has been refurbished with great taste. The owners are most informative re the area, restaurants etc.
They are number 1 on Tripadvisor in the Luberon and very centrally based for the whole of western Provence ie not the Cote d’Azur.

The referencing on most of websites isn't great as to where the properties are located and I know very little about the area. Is Mas Pomona just south of Avignon? If so is this a good base for the area ? we would like to visit vinyards and small towns with markets.

We have absolutely no interest in the Cote D Azur scene and are flying into Nice. A two hour drive is no issue at each end of the week.

Mas Pomona is above budget but we can justify it , it is perfect in terms of style. Just from a couple of hours research it would appear that the ex pats charge more than French owned properties. We would prefer to stay in a French owned property.

I suggest you contact Stu Dudley who is a regular poster on here. He has written a great guide to Provence and it will answer many of your questions about what is quintessential Provence. His email address is [email protected] and he is happy to email it to you.
I would say that the towns of the Luberon fit your description quite well. We went to Gordes, Roussillon, Bonnieux, and just drove through Menerbes and Lacoste - I would say they fit your description well. Along with Les Baux which is close to St. Remy.

Dickie G: Mas Pomona is south of Avignon in the Luberon National Park, it is perfectly situated, not just for the Luberon eg Gordes, Rousillion, Menerbes and L’Isle sure la Sorgue etc but is also only 20 minutes from St Remy and The Alpilles. It’s 5/6 kms from the motorway so access to the Cotes du Rhone wine area and the coast, Cassis, is easy. We have stayed in French owned B&Bs, they are less expensive, but tend to restrictive with rules and some are just dowdy and unkempt.
Mas Pomona fulfils all your criteria, you will enjoy it I’m sure.
