Help leaving in 2 weeks -Lugano, Luzern??
Help, we are leaving in two weeks for Europe and now we have freed up our time in Zurich. We were going to meet people in Zurich and stay there for three nights and just do day trips from Zurich (Luzern, etc.)also, our flight leaves from there. Now we are trying to decide if Lugano is worth a night and the extra train travel or should we devote a night to Lugano and one to Luzern. Is Lugano fun at night, how about Luzern? Thanks very much.

I'm not sure about nightlife.

With an extra night or two in Switzerland I'd sure spend the time in the mountains which are far more spectacular than Switzerland's cities.

(The cities are nice, but there are better ones in Europe ... Luzern perhaps an exception.)

Suggestions for a short visit to Switzerland at http://twenj.com/swissshort.htm

Ed

Good evening,. bp
I would use Luzern for a base for the
mountains of Rigi, Pilatus and Titlis,
also don't over the lake itself, its
steamers can provide a good way if you
have a rainy day. Don't go up if the
weather is cloudy, as you can't see
anything. Have stayed in both Luzern
and Lugano, the old town in Luzern has
some action at night, however Lugano's
old town and pza Razzomco and Riforma
might carry a slight edge over Luzern.
Both towns have excellant casinos and
both are on lakes. We have always used
the Hotel WILDEN MANN in Luzern and the
Hotel LUGANO DANTE in Lugano. Luzern
is along the germanic lines and Lugano
the italian...
Go to Lugano first and then return to
Luzern as it is only a 55 minute trip
to the Zurich HB and an additional l5
mins to Kloten, some of the trains go
directly thru and to the airport.
Heres a few urs to check out....
www.sbb.ch/
www.swisshotels.ch/
www.verkehrshaus.ch/
www.tourism.ticino.ch/
www.vierwaldstaetterseesued.ch/
www.titlis.ch/ www.zhol.ch/
www.rigi.ch/ www.staedte.ch/lu/
www.citynet.ch/ www.schweizferien.ch/
www.luzern.org/ www.zurich-airport.ch/
www.pubblinet.com/
Good surfing, have a good trip.
Richard of Hickory Hills, IL...
Lucerne, definitely! Just returned. By all means take the circle trip to Pilatus, by boat, cog train, aerial tramway and gondola. For a wonderful meal, a local specialty, dine al fresco at Des Balances (on the river) and order Chogelipastete, a creamy meat & mushroom-filled pastry puff dish. Take your camera for a picture of this picturesque and delicious dish. You'll love it. Walk the wall. Visit the Lion and the glacier garden. Lucerne is a very special Swiss city. Enjoy!

i agree with staying in the mountains. last year my husband and i were in switzerland in the grindlewald area and a friend suggested that we take a few days and visit lugano. we drove all the way to lugano, spent the night and turned around and went back to the mountains the very next morning. we did have a wonderful dinner while we were there in gandria. we returned to lauterbrunnen (i'm sure i spelled this wrong!) and spent our last three days there. just give me the alps!
