Health Insurance

Being that most American's are not covered by there carriers overseas, what do most Americans do about health insurance while in Europe?

Many plans do cover medical expenses outside the US. Typically you have to pay the bill yourself and then submit the detailed reciept to your plan and they will give you the usual out of network amount (my plan pays 80% of usual and customary).

If you belong to a strict HMO - or some other plan that doesn't pay outside the US - but check first - then it's always wise to have medical coverage as part of your travel insurance.

Also note that Medicare does not pay outside the US in which case your secondary insurance (AARP or whatever) might become your primary insurance - again, check on how it works for your specific plan.

We always buy travel insurance that includes medical coverage AND evacuation, just in case.

My Medicare Advantage Plan covers outside the US because it is considered "emergency treatment", as did my insurance when I was working. Had to pay via a credit card in front but was reimbursed

www.insuremytrip.com - it is a site that you can use to search for and purchase travel policies. We do that for every international trip since our insurance doesn't cover us out of the country.

Definitely get emergency evacuation as part of your overage.
