Greece/Italy Honeymoon

Greetings! My fiance and I are planning our 2 week honeymoon for the beginning of june 2007. I was torn between the Greek Islands and Italy but now am thinking of doing both. I have been to both Rome and Venice and am looking to Do the Amalfi Coast and then go to Greece. Any thoughts on this idea? I know we could easily spend 2 weeks in each but thought this would be a great compromise.

Hi sk,

Sounds fine.

How will you get from Italy to Greece or VV?

That is what i'm wondering....not sure if we will have to get to Rome and Fly to Greece or if there is a boat we could take...I do not want to take a cruise though.

We were thinking of doing a combination as well (Athens, Naxos, Santorini, Rome, Venice) but decided that it was too much running around for two weeks. It takes a long time to pack, unpack, get to the airport or train, make the trip, etc.

Through my research, you can fly between Athens and either Rome, Milan, or Venice. So I would imagine after your time on Amalfi Coast, you have to get to the Rome airport, fly to Athens, and then make connections to an island as well.

On your honeymoon, a relaxing pace is important, so I would do either Greek Islands or Italy, not both, and save the other for next time. If you've been to Rome and Venice but want to go to Italy, perhaps you could do Amalfi Coast, Tuscany, and finish with a night or two in Rome? Or if you choose Greece, focus on a couple of islands & Athens.

I know exactly how you feel--it's very hard to decide!

You could do both, but you might find it pretty tiring for your honeymoon, since there's a lot of traveling involved.

You'd have to fly out of Rome to Athens. Since you don't have that much time to spare, I'd recommend flying from Athens to any of the islands you choose.

Most of the flights to the islands are quick ( Mykonos is one of the shorter flights- about 25 minutes out of Athens; Crete is about 40 minutes out of Athens).

Flights and particularly hotels (!) fill up quickly for the summer months. So I'd definitely recommend trying to book by the late fall for June.

Compromise !
To me you will be diluting both venues amd not enjoy either as much. Greece deserves a seperate trip and Italy takes 6 weeks to see well. Make a decision and go with it.

For cost reasons alone I'd probably prefer to spend two weeks in Greece than two weeks on the Amalfi Coast, but how about a week on the Amalfi Coast and a week on the Aeolian Islands of Sicily?

Another trip I'd consider is a week on the Greek islands and a week on the Turkish coast -- or even a week in Istanbul.

FYI, it's easy to take a day trip to Turkey from several Greek Islands, incl. Rhodes, or you can take a longer (few days to several days) cruise along the Turkish coast.

Also, two weeks in Greece depending on which islands you choose and where you stay/eat, can be significantly cheaper than two weeks on the Amalfi Coast.

However, I am completely torn about offering advice. I love the Amalfi Coast, but we just returned from a fantastic trip to Greece, which far exceeded my expectations.
