Great trip to Prague

My wife and I just got back from a great week in Prague. It was an anniversary trip and we picked Prague as we have heard great things about it....all true (and some). Prague is truly a stunning city and we were able to see it as "almost" locals -- thanks to our great guide.

Based on a suggestion from a friend we have seeked out a local tour guide -- Stepanka. She was truly amazing. She had helped us book our hotel, picked us up from the airport and took us to amazing places all around Prague. Prague Castle and Charles Bridge were stunning, but my favorite was Petrin -- the whole park along with the tower is awesome. Vysehrad was my wife's favorite. Stepanka has told us (and shown us) just about everything. She has planned the whole week and we still had plenty of time for ourselves - great hotel, great food and people all around. I highly recomend Prague to everyone that wants to experience that old world charm.

And don't go at it alone -- find somebody local and let them help you. Services like this are affordable and so worth every penny. Plus you will save a lot of cash when you have someone "show you the ropes" -- discounts in hotels, restaurants and store -- we were not turists when it came to paying the check.

Here is Stepanka's contact for those that might want to use her services: Stepanka Holesova: e-mail; [email protected]: web address; www.prague-my-love.com.

We will be coming back soon. Next time we want to explore more of Czech Republic outside of Prague.

Michael

I never had any problems doing Prague "alone" (without an expensive guide).

We love local guides to give us a sense of history and for information we could read about, but is much more interesting when on the fly. But for a whole week?
We will be in Prague in Nov, and have arranged two 3-hour walks with a private guide over 2 days. This gives us the rest of each day, plus another (we are there for 3 1/2 days) to explore on our own or go back if we found something especially interesting. A balance which suits us.

Have a good time "mel1". You are right, you don't need a guide 24/7, especially if you are staying in a central location, and can explore on your own. It really is nice to have some locals show you the ropes the first time around, though.

Mihei's tip about Petrin park and Vysehrad are good. If you have time, explore one, or both of these places. Letna Park is awesome, too.
And you won't need a guide for those areas... ;-)

As opposed to a private guide (costly for one person), can you recommend a good tour company for guided walks or even day trips out of town? There seems to be many tour companies to choose from (Prague Walks, Premiant, OK, etc.) that seem very thorough and not too costly.

Hi mihei,
I agree Prague is fabulous, I have been there many times now and although I have never felt the need to have a guide, I have friends from Plzen that kindly arranged trips etc. It was good to see things from a Cz persons perspective too.

Thanks for the link to the guide, maybe people will investigate that route if they so desire.

Do you have a full trip report? I would be interested to read it.

Cheers

We used Premient for a tour of Terezin. Our guide was excellent; her father was a prisoner who escaped from Terezin. Because he was NOT Jewish, the locals hid him their barns.

She was very outspoken and never tried to cover up the anti-Semitism of the Czech people.

Oh, and Sibelius, a former poster, the great Elaine of TTG, has always touted Sylvia Wittman Tours for the best walking tours of Prague.
