Germany/Belgium in Aug 2006
Hey Guys!
Myself, my best friend, and my parents are heading over to Germany next August for a much needed vacation. We're looking to stay near Munich, or Bavaria in general. Trips for myself and best friend to breweries, as well as Berchtesgaden and the castles near Salzburg. My best friend and I are brewers, so we're headed up to Belgium as well while my folks may make trips into Switzerland. Basically, looking for any advice on where to stay in both areas.
Travelling by train (Eurail passes all around).
August 16-30.
2 Rooms (if hotel, or diff bedrooms if not, my father snores like a chainsaw). Preferably with own bathroom.
In general, clean rooms but nothing fancy near rail stations.
In Germany willing to stay in Munich and environs, or in Bavaria.
In Belgium, any advice would be great! Looking to visit Westvetleren and a few other breweries.
Thanks in advance!
Robert

I can comment on Berchtesgaden, as we spent a week near there this past May. Actually we rented an apartment in Schonau am Konigssee, about a five minute drive from Berchtesgaden. If you click on my screen name, you should be able to find both my brief trip report and the pictures that I posted from our trip.
I don't have any recommendations for hotels, but Berchtesgaden does have quite an array of them. There are also tons of vacation apartments in the area that are very reasonably priced. We stayed in a wonderful one with views of stunning views of the mountains, and the price came to about $50 a night. Most apartments in the area will rent per night as opposed to per week. If your interested or want more info, you can check out wwww.vacation-apartments.com.
The area is spectacular, with beautiful mountains, crystal-clear lakes and lots of flowers everywhere. If you spend time here, definitely take the boat ride on the Konigssee. Berchtesgaden is a neat town to explore, and the view from the Eagles Nest was amazing. From Schonau we took daytrips to Salzburg (20 mile drive) and the Salzkammergut. I will say that I think this area would be better for exploring with a car, but Berchtesgaden does have a train station close to the center of town. From there I'm sure you could train to Salzburg or Hallstatt pretty easily.
I don't know too much about beer (that's my husbands job!), but we did try some great beer while in the area. Berchtesgaden has the Hofbrauhaus (as does Munich, obviously), and the Hallstatt beer that we tried in Hallstatt was pretty good as well. We also stayed in Appenzell, Switzerland, not too far from the German border, and they too brew their own Appenzeller beer that is pretty good.
Perhaps someone else can chime in with hotel recommendations, but I thought I would give you my thoughts on the area. Perhaps these websites can be of help as well:

Good luck!

Hi Robert - do you speak German? My husband has done several brewery tours near Munich, but many were in German only.
I can recommend this hotel in Munich - fantastic location & very charming. We had a giant family room with 3 beds and our own big bath. Not sure of your budget, or if this is the type of place you're looking for: http://www.hotelenglischergarten.de/
It's about a 10 minute walk to the subway through a nice neighborhood with cute shops & great places to eat. It's across the street from a wonderful restaurant. And it's right on Munich's version of Central Park, a short walk away from the Chinese Tower beer garden in the park - one of my favorites in Germany (best potatoes I've ever had!)
We've also stayed in Brugge, Belgium - which is just gorgeous (and does have a local brewery with a decent tour). Not sure if that city is on your list, though. This site has links to lots of Belgian breweries: http://www.beerparadise.be/

Robert --
A few beer suggestions for you (from another brewer...though I'm only on my 3rd batch).
www.babblebelt.com -- great info for Belgium brews
www.franconiabeerguide.com -- may tempt you to hear towards Bamberg.
I recently posted a thread entitled "Are you a beer hunter" and got several nice responses including some detailed ones re: Germany.
We are headed to Brugge, Belgium for our 3rd trip...fabulous city for beer. Go in August, but go again in winter -- Belgian beers are great, but Belgian CHRISTMAS beers are even better!

I'd probably get 2 rooms, just because I wouldn't want to be in the same room as my parents!
The room we had (which is called the "family room" was giant - one of the biggest ones I've every had in Europe. A whole sitting area with table & chairs, where we played euchre one evening with our friends.
