Family Run Accomodations

Hi, Next summer my family and I will be traveling to southern Germany and the Salzburg area for 14 days. We would like to stay in small guest houses or private homes rather than larger, more expensive hotels. We will likely stay approximately two nights before moving on to another area. I would appreciate websites that would help me find these type of accomodations.
Thanks,
Fred

There is a multitude of such places throughout Germany and in Bavaria specifically. One very good site is www.accommodation.de, where you can search by region. Start with Bavaria - then you'll have links to areas within Bavaria to choose from. We stayed 2 nights at this cute place in the charming town of Neustadt an der Aisch (good town for daytrips to Nuremberg, Rothenburg, Wurzburg) for about 30 Euros/night:

www.accommodation.de/48003.htm

Most towns maintain a website with lists of such vacation rentals and B&B's as well; type www.(name of town.de and look for links in English or words like "Privatvermieter" or "Privatunterkunft" (usually B&B)or "Ferienwohnung" (vacation rental, sometimes available for as few as 2 or 3 days, but often by the week.)

Sorry, no tips for Salzburg itself.

Fred, if you haven't already done so, please read my report; you'll find some suggestions there.

Lucky you! We love to stay in accomodations in Germany like the ones you're seeking.

For all things Bavarian, be sure to check out Bavaria Ben's noncommercial site at: http://www.bensbauernhof.com. He's contributed much to this board. Also type <Wes Fowler> into the search box for much great info about the area. Wes was one of our resident Bavaria experts until his death last year.

Please report back to us with any great guesthouses you find.

If you're in Munich, check out the Hotel Uhland. It's been run by the same family for over 50 years. Although it's called a "hotel", it's actually a beautiful mansion in a charming, tree-lined, quasi-residential area by the Oktoberfest park. By American standards, I'd call it an upscale B&B. We stayed there in June and loved it. We had a wonderful large suite that had two twin beds for my kids and a nice double/king for us. I highly recommend it. Great breakfast buffet, too, included. Free use of the internet, with complimentary coffee in a room off the entryway. Even free use of their bikes, walking distance to train station, and several nice local restaurants within a few blocks.

Fred--do you have any idea of which towns you would like to stay in?

If visiting the castles in Hohenschwangau, I can recommend this place: http://www.albrecht-neuschwanstein.de/index2.html

A restaurant with very good Bavarian menu within a few minutes drive of the pension: http://www.alpenhotel-allgaeu.de/engl/e-willkommen.htm
