Limerick City has King John's Castle w/the Treaty Stone, the Hunt Museum and it is much more cityfied than Galway. I think, population-wise it's the Irish Republic's second largest City.
Galway is much more 'laid back.'
You can catch a BusEireann to either City from Shannon airport (Citylink also serves the Shannon-Galway route).
If I didn't have relatives in Limerick I would choose Galway or Ennis. The latter is one of my favorite places on God's Green earth. And if your trip happens to be in November, you might catch some of Ennis' Fall Music festival.
There is also hourly Citylink Bus service direct from Galway (Tourist Office) to Dublin (about 4-hrs.).

Limerick is the third-biggest city in the Republic and Galway is fourth-biggest. Limerick is in parts very run-down and does not attract many tourists. Galway is a lively, prosperous city thronged with visitors. Galway also has a better rail link with Dublin.

A vote for Galway. Very lively and young town with lots of music possibilities. The "walking mall" is filled with some nice shops including the famous Kenny's book store. Very easy to find food and pubs and more tourist friendly.

Oh, Bill, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Kenny's Book Shop is closed. The family still sells books, but only online. I think they moved the gallery part of things to a spot down near the docks. Hard to believe and very sad.
