Hello.. I will have a six hour layover in Frankfurt in March.. I want to leave and go to Romerberg for a couple hours.. There will be five in my group.. I know I can catch the train at the airport, but can anyone give some advice on just how to get to Romerberg, and then back to the airport?.. Does the train from the airport go there or will I need to change trains?.. Also.. I hear that if you cross the footbridge over the river, the food is much cheaper.. is this true?..

Any help is greatly apprecaited!!! Thanks

The Romerberg will be one of the Römerberg stops - there are several different stops.

Looks like you'll need to change trains in Mannheim.

It has been awhile since I've been in Frankfurt City center, but, in the past, we didn't change trains from the airport to the city center. The train station in the City center is the Hauptbahnhof. The other two stops are Hauptwache and Konstablerwache. I don't remember which is best for the Romer. With five people, you should qualify for a group ticket. Also, if you type in Frankfurt trains or Frankfurt train station in the search above, there are quite a few threads relating to this.

Just to clarify - are you looking to visit The Römerberg in Frankfurt am Main - the old square and row houses, or visit the town of Römerberg, which is about an hour away?

I gave you directions to the latter.

To get to downtown Frankfurt you'd take the regional train (S-bahn) to Frankfurt Hbf, then catch the subway to the Dom/Roemer stop. A much quicker ride from the airport.

You obviously want to go to Römerberg in Frankfurt, not the town of Römerberg south of Mannheim.

Take the train from the Airport to the Frankfurt main station (Hauptbahnhof) and then take U-Bahn U4 or U5 to Römerberg.

There are several ways. Take the S-8 or S-9 into the city and get off at the Hauptwache stop. Go upstairs (you will be on the Zeil, the big shopping street) and you will see a large Esprit store and a Hako shoe store with a pedestrian passage between them. Walk down this about 5 minutes and you will be at the Römer. If you want to get off at the Hauptbahnhof so you can at least see what a beautiful train station this is, you can continue on to the Römer by either taking the U-4 or U-5 to the Dom/Römer stop, or even better is to ride the tram #11 which stops right out in front of the Hauptbahnhof. You will get off at the 3rd stop which is Römer/Paulskirche. The Römer is right there. This lets you see a bit of the city by riding above ground.

I recommend getting either a group ticket which costs 14 euro and will cover all 5 of you going into the city and back again. Just push the button on the ticket machine that says "Gruppen - Frankfurt". Or get a Frankfurt Card for your group. At 18 euro, it covers not only public transportation for 5 people all day long the same as the group ticket above, but also gets you 50% off of museum admissions.

The S-bahn ride to the Hauptbahnhof takes 11 min. to the Hauptwache, 15 min. S-bahns come every 20 min. The escalators to the S-bahn station are near the B and the C halls in Terminal 1. There is a place to store your luggage near by.

Thank you guys... yes I did mean Romerberg in the city, near the river.. with the old (rebuilt) buildings.. I appreciate the help.. with only a six hour layover, I dont want to be trying to figure this out after arriving at the airport!.. Thanks again!
