Flying into Venice and from there to Ljubljana
Want to see Venice and after seeing the city will meet a tour group in Ljubljana. How many days would you suggest a solo traveler to spend in Venice. Any suggestions on accommodations would be appreciated. What is the best way to travel from Venice to Ljubljana and since I will be joining a tour group I will not be renting a car. What would you suggest air, train or bus? Thanks again

The easiest way to get to Ljubljana without a car is to take the daily DRD bus from Venice Mestre to Ljubljana:
http://drd.si/en/
You can easily get from Venice Santa Lucia train station to Mestre by train - only about a 10 to 15 minute ride, numerous trains. The DRD bus, when I took it a few years ago, was across the street from the Mestre train/bus station. It wasn't one of the officially parked buses at the station; I saw a DRD van across the street (the van drove is around the block to a full-sized bus). The bus was about a 3.5 hour ride with an occasional rest stop.
There's also a Slovenian shuttle service called GoOpti you might look into.
A more adventurous way is to take a train from Venice to Trieste, catch a taxi (supposedly not long) to Sežana, Slovenia right across the border, and then another train on to Ljubljana. It takes a bit longer that way. The DRD bus is certainly more direct once you get to Mestre. If you want to take only trains, you can take a train from Venice and connect up in Austria and down to Ljubljana, but that takes even longer.

an easier all rail route goes from Venice to Villach (Austrian border station) then change to direct train to Llubljana - but 7 hours all told but no long transfer as via rail route via Triest - there used to be some direct Zagreb/Llubljana trains but for some reason they were scrubbed a few years back - talk about track work, etc being done but have heard nothing of their ressurection
Sounds like Andrew's bus mention is the easiest way to bo between Lluljana and Venice.

No two full days would not be too little - Venice itself is compact - spend one dy doing the major sights and then just walk around areas off the beaten track - oh you could days there but a few days for most is enough to 'get the flavor of the city'.
