First time solo female traveler spending 7 nights in Amsterdam/Copenhagen

Hello all!
I am a female in my 20's embarking on my first solo, and international, adventure. I will be spending 7 nights in Amsterdam/Copenhagen and am grateful for any and all advice you can toss my way. I will be arriving in AMS on Sept. 5th and departing from AMS Sept. 12th. I plan on spending the first 3 nights in AMS and then flying to CPH to spend 2 or 3 nights (haven't decided), then returning to AMS until my flight on the 12th. From what I have read it appears that it is more cost effective to book the flight to CPH in advance, rather than waiting until I arrive, is this accurate? Round trip fares are currently ~ £80. I would love to visit more cities, but I don't want to stretch myself too thin so I will just stick to a couple of day trips from the aforementioned cities, any suggestions? I am a nurse so my budget isn't too tight, but I don't want to break the bank. I'm relatively active, enjoy a good adrenaline rush, being near water, smoking, befriending locals and experiencing their cultures, food, art, architecture, museums to an extent, bars that aren't too busy, and just adventuring in general, especially going off the beaten path. I'm a fan of hole-in-the-wall places and am uncomfortable in crowds. I'm very laid back and open to seeing where this trip may take me, but would like some structure. Thank you for taking the time to read the rambles of a young traveler!

best deals will be fly into AMS and back from CPH, book early gets you best prices

In Hostels there are a bunch of very cheap hotels like Cabinncity which are very basic and pleasant. You can get to them by the train from the airport or by bus from the airport. The benefit of the bus is it dumps you outside the doors of Cabinncity, while you will have to schlep stuff over from the station. Use google maps to track down which bus stops. Watch out for those bikes, far more than in AMS

Day trip, Roskilde can be interesting. When are you there? The Danes basically holiday July away and universities chuck out at the end of June with parties all night. Crowds in Denmark unlikely as no one lives there.

AMS hotels/hostels prices are linked to where you are. Lots of choice, try booking.com

I assume you have already booked the Amsterdam flights? If not, as bilboburgler suggests, try to book an "open jaw" into AMS out of CPH instead of the extra flight in between that costs extra time and money. But it all depends. Sometimes your fare is cheaper/more convenient doing the round trip, but it's worth checking, anyway.

You might consider flying into AMS (if you have already booked the AMS flights) and right back out to CPH that same day. Then fly back to AMS a few days later and finish in Amsterdam. The big reason to do it this way is to avoid splitting up your nights in Amsterdam at the beginning and end. And you wouldn't have to get to/from AMS into Amsterdam one extra time. The downside of doing it this way is: you're a novice traveler (so you might find this unnerving, making a connection to another city first time to Europe?), plus there's always a chance your flight into AMS will be delayed and you'd miss the connecting flight - and might have to book an expensive last-minute replacement flight. But if you leave say a 4 hour layover chances are good you'd make the connection, probably have lots of time to kill at AMS.

Www.skyscanner.com specializes in one-way fares on Europe's budget airlines. You may find even cheaper fares Amsterdam-Copenhagen than you quoted. European websites are not required to put the total price of a fare on the opening page so be sure to check on extra fees such as checked luggage. Prices on these lines go one way only -- up -- so buy as soon as you can for the best deal.
You gave no idea of your departure city. If you are crossing the Atlantic, I'd bet you can use a multi-destination search function from an on-line agency or even airline to route yourself into Amsterdam and home from Copenhagen (or vice versa. That itinerary will save substantial time during a short vacation and probably will cost about the same when you consider the price of flying back to your arrival city. If you are based in the UK the advice is valid but the money less significant.

Www.matrix.itasoftware is a Google company that serves airlines and shows a wide range of carriers across the Atlantic. It doesn't sell tickets but you can use the info to find an airline or an on-line agency to make your purchase.

I thought Google had rolled all of that into Google Flights?

Yes, book the flight in advance to save money. I booked Paris to Copenhagen, one way, for about $52., and on Air France, but did it many months ago for an upcoming trip.

Copenhagen is a lovely city. I've been going there regularly since the early 70s and used to spend 11-weeks straight there during the summers. I'll also be there this summer. Have fun.

Happy Travels!
