We joke that we are returning to Italy for the gelato - but is it really a joke? What is your favorite shop and flavor? I loved the Riso at Vivoli in Florence and the Limoncello at Costarela in Siena.

Mine is at Amorino in Paris (sorry) and it's coconut, with pistachio a close second. It's great in Italy, but this is by far my favorite.
Tiramisu, a the gelateria on the upper road in Bellagio. Also like Crema di Nona.
mmmmm, pistachio!
Gelato isn't my favorite frozen dessert item, but I will eat tiramisu, dolce de leche, and stracciatella. I have had gelato in a number of places over the years, and I can't tell much difference between one vendor and another.
Now if you ask me about my favorite beer places and beers, I can be a lot more specific!
Coffee and chocolate, a scoop of each.
Fragola
A cup with half raspberry, half white chocolate, from Perche No! in Florence.
Hazelnut
Lemon
I think the best gelato I've ever eaten is in Rapallo at Frigidarium, where the fruit gelati are made only in season, and they are made without milk. The canteloupe gelato in summer is extraordinary. Frigidarium is on the sea, across the street from the castle.
Well, our motto was "two gelatos a day" and we tried as many flavors as possible, but I think my favorite were any of the fruit ones. I can't recall the name of the shop that my family voted our favorite, but it is right across the street from the Cat Sanctuary in Rome.
Two a day!
Maybe you can help me with this one, zeppole. While in Florence - near Galleria dell'Accademia - we found a canteloupe "slush". I don't know what it was actually called but it was just frozen cateloupe blended with simple syrup (I believe). It was amazing and I want to be able to ask for it this time. Anyone else experience this Italian "Slurpee"?
My fifth try at replying: I'm on a new netbook and the keyboard is killing me. Anyway, I apologize for the above post. I meant to say that I am jealous of two a day. DH doesn't like gelato and I feel guilty every time fat me has one and skinny him doesn't.
Favorite: Pistachio at Gelataria Piazza in San Gimignano, and chocolate/orange at Frigadarium in Rome.
Oh, I'd forgotten about that place, tuscanlifeedit! Can I have two favorites? Because their peach was fantastic.
At least 2 a day! Love tiramisu and zabaglione. Some of the best gelato I've had is at no name places in little villages thruout Italy.
Hazelnut.
Two-a-days with discipline.
Nocciola (hazelnut) is the gelato to end all gelati!
If I'm splurging, I get a coppa nonno (grandpa's cup), a scoop each of chocolate, coffee, and nocciola.
Riso and Pistachio (spelling?). Been to Vivoli in Florence a couple of times...but I have to agree with TPAYT...I love Amorino in Paris (multiple locations in Paris including the Marais and Ile St Louis).
I also love stracciatella, though it's pretty mundane (chocolate & vanilla), and there was a flavor that had chocolate and cherries that I really loved...can't remember the name of it...maybe some Fodorites can refresh my memory.
SS
The slush is a granita. I like them better than gelati.
Gianduia (chocolate-hazelnut) is my consistent favorite, but I usually find a new favorite on each trip. One trip I became totally committed to Crocante (cream with pralines), based on a wonderful cupful at Tutto Gelato in Cesena. On a trip to Bellagio, I was converted to Cannella (cinnamon) at the Gelateria Borgo in Bellagio (on the upper road!).
I second fragola, or any of them that have real fruit
lavender! I am normally a pistachio person but tried lavender once and loved it!
I've had granita (here in the states) but it was not this "liquidy" - don't think that's a word - is it different in Italy? This was like the consistancy of a Slush Puppy - remember those - crushed ice and juice combined - you drank it with a straw. If that is granita, I'm all for it.
Ah gelato!

My favorites? Chocolate, coconut, chocolate, pistachio, chocolate, crema, and anything with chocolate.
However, I have to agree with cls2paris about lavendar. While at Chateau de Cheverny, waiting for the dogs to be fed, there was this little gelato cart. Trying to decide which flavor, the server gave me a sample of her lavendar -- ooh la la! I was hooked from the first little spoonful!
Two a day, puleeze. I once had three in one day and once I even snuck out of our hotel on our last day in Rome as my DH and our traveling companions slept so I could sneak in another one. My favorite Gelati place is on the corner as you enter Piazza Navonna, with Giolitti near the Pantheon as a close second. Favorite flavor is pistachio, then coconut, and riso (hard to find-got one in Pienza). Thrilled to hear they are now selling gelato in Paris, as God and volcano willing, we are heading there in early June.
Another vote for hazelnut...yummy! I stayed at a hotel in Florence across from Festival de gelato. I clearly cannot be blamed for eating several per day while there.
One scoop of dark chocolate and one scoop of raspberry - the combination is gorgeous!
Coffee, especially if it has bits of coffee chips mixed in. Also the various hazelnut/chocolate looking flavors like Bacio and Nocciola.
What is riso? I thought it was rice, but is it rice flavored gelato? That doesn't make sense to me so I'm guessing there is another meaning! Thanks!
Riso is rice - kind of a frozen rice pudding - yum
The word "stracciatella" is sacred in our family!
Oh, how I loved that place in San G, Tuscan! Last trip was Rome, where favorites were pistachio and MultipeBerry, something like that,
I love the chocolate-hazelnut and the honey-lavender is a close second.
This must be the reason that God gave us two hands.
Coconut, but my niece swears by pear.
The record for consumption in one day for our family of 4 was 18 scoops. My 6'4" (then about 17 years old) son was responsible for more than his share. (BTW, since there are frequent discussion on this forum about fat Americans, we are all thin and typically eat responsibly.)
Boring, perhaps, but I love stracciatella. I also like the chocolate-hazelnut and the pistaccio. BUT I can't think of any gelato I had in Italy that I did not like. I just pick whichever looks good to me at the moment.
PJK I think it's a right of passage to have gelato in Italy, especially in Florence. Fat or thin, doesn't matter. My hb and I are both in reasonable shape but don't deny ourselves when we are in Europe. All the walking we do means that we come home thinner than we left! 18 scoops is an amazing effort though!! Only a 17 year old boy could contribute to that and burn it off without a scrap of trouble.
One of the perks of travel as we do it, is that you can eat as much gelato as we like without fear, because we do so much walking.
BTW -- I'm still waiting for someone to tell me the name of the flavor that we love that has chocolate and cherries...anyone out there know?? We ate a lot of it at the Amorino (I believe on Rue Vielle du Temple just south of Rue des Rosiers) near our hotel in Paris.
SS
Another vote for chocolate and nocciola - anywhere in Florence. In Rome I always go back to a small place in a side street close to Trevi - cannot remember the place's or street's name.
Ssander, if volcanoes allow, I will be going to Paris end of May and I never leave without a gelato or two from Amorino. I will look for your chocolate/cherry one and post back - if nobody has done so by then.
Chestnut! followed by hazelnut. We actuaqlly have a gelato place here in town. It's pretty good but not like Amorino or Gioletti
Pistachio for me, raspberry, strawberry or coffee for my daughter. Each night last May we walked from our apartment in Trastevere to Giolitti for our gelato fix. I tried some tasty fruit flavors, but Pistachio was my favorite. We tried the more popular place, Della Palma north of the Pantheon, up Maddalena on the way to Giolitti, but preferred Giolitti for flavor and price. We also tried a teeny place in Trastevere that was tasty.
You know here at home the idea of having ice cream more than say, once every four months is horrifying, but somehow having gelato every day in Italy is just fine. I've never gained weight on vacation, ever, so it must be ok....
I thought gelato wasn't fattening?!? I'm sure I read that before we left the States.....
Gelato = happy kids.
I have enjoyed lots of gelato during my many trips to Europe. I remember the various flavors but never remember the name of the places or the gelato/ice cream stores.
So, how do you all remember all these names. Do you write everything down and then have it handy to reply to such posts.
Want to learn how to contribute better than I do sometimes.
Enjoying noting that like me many others love pistachio too.
Have a great day.
My new thing on our last trip was half coconut/half some type of fruit. Coconut w/ either watermelon, lemon, strawberry, mixed berry...you get the idea. It was DELICIOUS!!
Ahhh, did someone say G e l a t o?
Proud member of the 2 gelati-a-day support group.
Hazelnut is tops on my list. Also fragola, limoncello, good old vaniglia + cioccolato, zabaglione, coconut, even gorgonzola!
tuscan: you brought back good memories with your mention of the Gelateria di Piazza at the Piazza della Cisterna in San G.
Will make sure we'll have multiple stops at Amorino this summer.
Senorarroz: Thanks for starting this thread!
I love lemon or lime gelato.
Actually the best I've ever eaten was in Paris in the Marais District.
mdm- where did you stay in Trastevere? I will be staying there as well in a b&b/apartment in June. I'll look for Giolitti.
My favorite flavors are:
zabaglione
yogurt
hazelnut
chestnut sounds fantastic though I've never tried it. I am imagining/hoping it tastes like hot roasted chestnuts.
We have a pretty fantastic place here in San Diego and my favorite flavors are cardamom, vanilla rose (really tastes like a rose), honey lavender, cinnamon, and roasted banana.
roasted banana? yum, that sound really good NCounty.
What is the name and location? (I'm in La Jolla).
Sorbetteria Castiglione in Via Castiglione, Bologna. Largely regarded by all who know and love Bologna (and Gelato) as the best in the city (and for my money, the best in Italy!!) Flavour? Doesn't matter, they're all to die for, but I like one scoop of pistachio and one scoop of their cioccolato (the most decadent, dark chocolate gelato I've ever had).
Nocciola, coconut, stracciatella, banana, pistachio... depends on my mood, and what ms_go is getting. Because we almost never get the same thing.
Did you hear about the Gelato Festival scheduled for May 28 to May 31 in Florence?
www.firenzegelatofestival.it/site/home.asp
As luck would have it--we're headed that way and licking our chops. Wife loves the coco and limone and I move among flavors as the mood takes me.
it's a little hole in the wall in the Encinitas lumberyard district called Bubby's, nanabee. Try those flavors, it is fantastic.
btw, I love their gelato so much, I never get a cone. I buy the pint or quart.... it is much more cost effective. They will load two flavors for you in the pint or quart.
Hazelnut, but lemon is the best on a really hot day.
There is nothing better than a top-notch nocciola (hazelnut). That said, my favorite unique flavor is cioccolata del'arancia (SP, I'm sure)--Chocolate with orange--at Della Palma in Rome. Yum!
ileen...

How do I remember the name of the gelato place? On our last two trips to Paris (each 1-week-long), we went to Amorino pretty-much every night after dinner! Not easy to forget.
SS
Prior to going to Italy, I would've said Chocolate and Strawberry or chocolate and Raspberry. Now since Italy I have to add (and I can't remember the proper name) the dark chocolate with Rum; omg! But then I tried Coconut- wow! Coconut with chocolate- better than a mounds bar!!!!
i also love stracciatella or a dark raspberry...oohh yum. I just remember a wonderful gelato shop across from the Trevi Fountain in Rome. Wish I was there.....The most rewarding gelato I ever had was after hiking in the Cinque Terre...at that point who cared about calories.
AS much of a chocolate addict as I am, I have to admit the best I've had was grapefruit at the famous place near the Trevi Fountain. Can anyone help me out with the name?
Has to be saffron at Gelataria Piazza in San Gimignano. Glad to see so many people agreeing on Amorino in Paris.
In Sirmione last year, we were in a restaurant and I opted for the Rum 'n Raisin--my favourite!
I received a dish of vanilla ice cream , sprinkled with raisins, a drizzle of honey and a shot of rum. Now THAT was a rum 'n raisin!
I plan to dine on Nocciola every night during my two weeks in Italy. My wife and I are addicts. The "fun" for us is trying to find the best deal. With all the competition in Lido de Jesolo, we can find it for around a Euro for a cone. The most expensive we ever had was in Florence when we ordered the piccolo at the gelateria catacorner from the Uffizi. Over $20 a cup, but it was darn fine ice cream!
I nocciola is my favorite too but I like to mix it up now and then - nocciola will be my first and last during our trip in June - but riso, lavender, and limoncello will help fill in the days in between. 19 days means a LOT of gelato. Any other really "interesting" flavors discovered?
Sesamo e miele (sesame and honey) at Gelateria della palma in rome.
Also, the combination of pompelmo rosa (pink grapefruit) and mandarino (mandarin orange) also at Della palma is pretty killer.
Pistachio is my favorite. I did have a poppy pistachio one time. It was wonderful! But it was more of a sorbet.

Monica
That should read "poppy flavor"
Chocolate for sure, but I had to try huckleberry since this is a native fruit in the Pacific NW. I was so surprised to see that flavour at the gelato shop next to the Trevi Fountain. Of course, it was delicious!
Passion fruit is the very best and is wonderful combined with a scoop of cocoanut.

Thought I'd share a photo of an Amorino (Paris) gelato cone. It's only a few Euros, but of course it will cost a lot more than that to go and get it!
I'm not real good at this photo thing and I couldn't get it to not jump to all the photos after the photo of the cone, which I'm sure you're not interested in viewing.
I hope you can view the gorgeous pistachio, vanilla, and coconut cone.
Chocolate & lemon
Right off the main piazzetta in Capri.... gelato in a freshly-made waffle cone.
Flavor was cassata siciliana, with bits of candied fruit and dark chocolate in a creamy base.
sebinah, do you think it was the gelateria San Crispino (a block or so from the Trevi fountain)?
The fresh pear gelato I had there still makes me drool...
Oh, that place in Capri is amazing. I love their cones and gelato. The fig gelato there....hard to beat. Yum.
Melone...in the shop near the back side of the duomo in Orvieto (Pasqualetti).. would love to find chestnut somewhere, never have seen that.
San Crispino was our favorite too, but I have a hard time picking a single flavor.
As much as I loved the gelato in Forence, and Rome, and Sienna (well, anywhere in Italy), my favorite was in a little shop enroute from train station to the leaning tower in Pisa. 4 scoops of chocolate/nut flavors became dinner, Baci, hazelnut, almond, something else. After 8 years, I still can drool over it and never found anything in Canada or US to match. Second favourite is a white chocolate/passionfruit blend served up in the gelateria in Larcomar, Lima.
Has anyone been able to view the gorgeous gelato cone from Amorino in my above post?
Also, another question, in Italy I never saw these flower cones, do they make them?
annabelle2,
Yes it was San Crispino! Thanks.
Sebina
Stratecialla (sp?)
coconut, chocolate and lemon. Giolitti in Rome was my first time to taste gelato.
i tried every flavor they had!!
I guess everyone is ignoring my question about if they make the beautiful flower cones in Italy.

Maybe only the French know how!
The Nutella I eat in Rome!!!!
