Favorite Gelato Flavor?
We joke that we are returning to Italy for the gelato - but is it really a joke? What is your favorite shop and flavor? I loved the Riso at Vivoli in Florence and the Limoncello at Costarela in Siena.

Gelato isn't my favorite frozen dessert item, but I will eat tiramisu, dolce de leche, and stracciatella. I have had gelato in a number of places over the years, and I can't tell much difference between one vendor and another.
Now if you ask me about my favorite beer places and beers, I can be a lot more specific!

I think the best gelato I've ever eaten is in Rapallo at Frigidarium, where the fruit gelati are made only in season, and they are made without milk. The canteloupe gelato in summer is extraordinary. Frigidarium is on the sea, across the street from the castle.

Well, our motto was "two gelatos a day" and we tried as many flavors as possible, but I think my favorite were any of the fruit ones. I can't recall the name of the shop that my family voted our favorite, but it is right across the street from the Cat Sanctuary in Rome.

Maybe you can help me with this one, zeppole. While in Florence - near Galleria dell'Accademia - we found a canteloupe "slush". I don't know what it was actually called but it was just frozen cateloupe blended with simple syrup (I believe). It was amazing and I want to be able to ask for it this time. Anyone else experience this Italian "Slurpee"?

My fifth try at replying: I'm on a new netbook and the keyboard is killing me. Anyway, I apologize for the above post. I meant to say that I am jealous of two a day. DH doesn't like gelato and I feel guilty every time fat me has one and skinny him doesn't.
Favorite: Pistachio at Gelataria Piazza in San Gimignano, and chocolate/orange at Frigadarium in Rome.

Riso and Pistachio (spelling?). Been to Vivoli in Florence a couple of times...but I have to agree with TPAYT...I love Amorino in Paris (multiple locations in Paris including the Marais and Ile St Louis).
I also love stracciatella, though it's pretty mundane (chocolate & vanilla), and there was a flavor that had chocolate and cherries that I really loved...can't remember the name of it...maybe some Fodorites can refresh my memory.
